McCarthy Short, House Adjourns Until Tomorrow

The third vote was not a charm. Kevin McCarthy lost the third round of votes for Speaker of the House and he lost in a bigger fashion than the first two votes. Oof. Deanna told you about the first round which was spectacularly ugly. The fourth vote has been postponed and the House has adjourned until tomorrow. Mayhap, they will use the evening hours to get their shite together.

McCarthy lost the first vote by 19 votes, with 10 going to Biggs and 9 to a player to be named later. On the second round of votes, Matt Gaetz of Florida nominated Jim Jordan of Ohio and this time the 19 votes went to Jordan.

For the third round of voting Chip Roy nominated Jim Jordan in a fiery floor speech:

I agree with everything Chip said. Just watching the Democrats vote in lock step and clap like lemmings proves his point. The Republicans should have all argued this behind closed doors or in televised debates, between themselves. The $1.7 trillion dollar bill that was vomited up in December is proof enough. Language that stops funding from being used to secure the border. What in unshirted Hell? Behind closed doors argue. The Republicans give the sheeple too much ammunition.

Chip Roy was eloquent in his comments to Jake Tapper of CNN, unlike Bob Good of Virginia who cannot articulate his phone number:

When the third vote was taken, Byron Donalds of Florida flipped to Jim Jordan. Newsweek had the details:

In a statement posted to Twitter after the flip, Donalds wrote, “The reality is Rep. Kevin McCarthy doesn’t have the votes.”

“I committed my support to him publicly and for two votes on the House Floor,” the Florida Republican said. “218 is the number, and currently, no one is there.”

Democratic Representative Hakeem Jeffries had the highest number of votes, with 212.

“Our conference needs to recess and huddle and find someone or work out the next steps but these continuous votes aren’t working for anyone,” Donalds added. “When the dust settles, we will have a Republican Speaker, now is the time for our conference to debate and come to a consensus.”

He continued, “This will take time, Democracy is messy at times, but we will be ready to govern on behalf of the American people. Debate is healthy.”

Behind closed doors, dearest one.

I don’t give a fat rat’s backside who is Speaker of the House, truly. As long as the person is a Conservative and not Nancy Pelosi, right?

McCarthy, Jordan or the Women’s Lavatory Attendant. Just get your shite together, children. You have until tomorrow at noon.

When the first vote failed, I honestly wanted to be disappointed in the GOP holdouts but was just happy to see McCarthy fail to feel anything negative.

Now, I’m literally laughing out loud over this. I’m perfectly ok that it’s not being conducted behind closed doors – we need more transparency, not less, and the GOP cannot signal a shift in party priorities better than by flagging their dirty laundry.

I’m almost hoping the Democrats get bored and start voting for McCarthy, just to watch the shitshow stir.

Elect Byron Donalds as Speaker. A lot of boxes get checked.

  • Kevin says:

Well, I’m going to “eat my words” when I said McCarthy’s selection as Speaker was inevitable. It wasn’t a good sign on the third vote to have lost one vote versus gaining one.

Here’s what I don’t get. The 20 representatives “elect” holdouts are the rabid MAGA, budget hawks, election deniers (mostly), QAnon believers, in your face, anti-CRT, LGBTQ, Abortion rights representatives. Just the crowd that VG’s and most people who post on VG’s blog site. So, why the “stop looking stupid and vote in McCarthy sentiments? I thought you’d be ecstatic that the “swamp is being drained” even if it’s an ugly, drawn out and public battle.

It about made me barf to see child rapist Matt Gaetz get up and talk about “draining the swamp.” QAnon should look in their own closet for child rapists versus electing them. The CSPAN camera spent an inordinate amount of time focusing in on George Santos, alone, isolated, looking at his phone and yawning. I’m surprised the representative children of the repres The House Chamber is pretty much his only “safe place.” You can’t miss the videos of a couple dozen plus people swarming him asking about when he’s going to resign or does he have any remorse for his lies. Maybe Brazil will come to the defense of the GOP and seek to extradite him back to face check fraud charges. We can only hope.

Opps … I wish VG had the ability to edit a comment.

“I’m surprised the representative children of the repres The House Chamber is pretty much his only “safe place.”

It should have read, I’m surprised the representatives children were allowed to sit so close to Santos. The House Chamber is his only “safe place.”

And, as of noon today, he failed a FOURTH vote.
It looks like the smart leadership thing to do would be to withdraw and throw your support behind someone else. But that would require humility and not wanting to block “those people” who fill establishment types with such a sense of dread.
