Massachusetts Gov. Maura Healey was all smiles Monday as she signed a bill stripping away the state’s existing guardrails on abortions after 24 weeks. The room applauded. Women standing behind her smiled and cheered. Healey declared that she was “standing with women” and insisted the change was about protecting families facing devastating medical complications late in pregnancy. It sounds compassionate right up until you discover Massachusetts already had exceptions for those very circumstances. And that’s where this story goes from troubling to downright ghoulish.

This is one of those stories where “disturbing” doesn’t quite cover it.

The Exceptions Were Already There

Here’s the part that made me stop and read the Massachusetts law for myself. Because if Healey is going to stand there and talk about women facing devastating medical complications late in pregnancy, you would think Massachusetts had been leaving these women with nowhere to turn.

It wasn’t.

Before this bill, Massachusetts already allowed abortions after 24 weeks when a doctor determined it was necessary to preserve the life of the mother or protect her physical or mental health. The law also made exceptions for a lethal anomaly or diagnosis, as well as a grave condition that would not allow the baby to survive outside the womb without extraordinary medical intervention.

In other words, the heartbreaking cases Healey is using to defend this law were already addressed.

And think about what we’re being asked to believe here. If a baby died in utero at 30 or 35 weeks, was Massachusetts really forcing that mother to carry her dead baby until she eventually went into labor on her own? No. If a woman’s life was in danger, did doctors have to stand around helplessly because she was past 24 weeks? No.

Those are powerful and emotional circumstances, which is precisely why they make such an effective argument for expanding abortion law. But they don’t explain what Massachusetts just did.

Because Massachusetts didn’t simply make another exception.

It removed the requirement for those specific medical circumstances.

And that’s a very different story.

Democratic Gov. Maura Healey was met with applause and smiles as she signed away Massachusetts’ gestational limits on abortion, making the deep-blue state the 10th to permit the procedure up to birth.

Under the Prioritizing Patient Access to Care Act, health care workers will have greater discretion in determining whether to perform an abortion later in pregnancy, without facing legal penalties under the state’s previous restrictions.

Healey said the law is intended to ensure families facing medical complications late in pregnancy can abort their babies in Massachusetts rather than having to travel out of state. Those complications can include maternal health complications and fatal diagnoses. – Fox News

There Is Nothing To Celebrate Here

We’re talking about babies well past the halfway point of pregnancy. At 24 weeks, we’re not having some abstract argument about a clump of cells. We’re talking about a tiny human being with arms and legs, fingers and toes, and who, with extraordinary medical care, may already be able to survive outside the womb. Yet somehow we’ve reached a place where removing restrictions on ending that life is treated as something worthy of a celebration.

And what happens when that baby is 39 weeks along and ready to be born? The law doesn’t suddenly discover a conscience at full term. It provides no later gestational cutoff before birth. That’s where “removing the guardrails” stops being political rhetoric and becomes something truly horrifying.

And Healey wants to call that standing with women.

I don’t. Let me spell it out more clearly. Women in Massachusetts can kill their baby at any point, even right before giving birth, at full term.

Nothing is empowering about pretending the only human being who matters in that room is the one old enough to vote. There are two lives involved in every one of these pregnancies, even if Massachusetts lawmakers would rather write one of them out of the conversation.

At what point does “abortion” become a sanitized word for killing a baby?

We Should Be Horrified

There should still be some things that shock us. There should still be a point where we look at each other and say no, we’re not going any further. Apparently, 24 weeks isn’t that point anymore.

At 28 weeks, babies are born prematurely and survive every day. Yet Massachusetts decided the existing restrictions on ending those lives were too much. Then they held a ceremony, smiled for the cameras, applauded and called it standing with women.

I don’t know how anyone looks at this new bill and calls it progress or compassion. It’s murder is what it is.

My now almost 21-year old was born at 28 weeks.

We’ve sanitized abortion to the point that a baby barely even enters the conversation anymore, as though refusing to acknowledge that tiny human being somehow makes what is happening less horrific.

There are things a civilized society should never celebrate. Ending the life of a child should be one of them.

Massachusetts celebrated anyway.

And that is ghoulish.
