James Talarico Wants To Talk About Real Men. Let’s.

Nothing spices up a political campaign quite like a debate over what a real man looks like. Texas Democrat James Talarico recently jumped into that conversation on MS NOW, and since he was kind enough to invite everyone, it seems rude not to participate.

Talarico told MS NOW that real men serve others while weak men serve themselves. To make his point, he shared a story about his father helping an elderly widow by mowing her lawn.

I have no quarrel with Talarico’s father.

My quarrel is with politicians who tell one story about a decent human being and then somehow conclude they should be put in charge of defining masculinity for everyone else.

But since Talarico wants to tell us what a real man is, let’s have the conversation.

Real Men Protect Children

Talarico has spent years presenting himself as an advocate for transgender youth. He frequently speaks about loving and supporting trans kids, which sounds compassionate until you start asking what that support actually means.

Subjecting children to gender transition is profound child abuse. Fight me.

Children are sometimes confused, impulsive, and easily led astray. Children believe all sorts of things that aren’t true. That’s part of being a child. The job of adults is not to validate every feeling or reinforce every identity claim. The job of adults is to provide guidance, boundaries, wisdom, and, occasionally, the word “no”.

A real man understands that children need protection before they need affirmation.

A real man does not look at a struggling teenager and immediately conclude that hormones, blockers, and lifelong medicalization are the answer.

A real man does not stay silent while girls are told their discomfort should take a back seat to someone else’s identity.

A real man understands that adulthood is for life and childhood is temporary.

Real Men Respect Women’s Boundaries

Real men respect women. That used to be a fairly uncontroversial statement. But Talarico can’t even say the word woman. It’s now a neighbor with a uterus. My God.

Today, women are routinely told they should surrender sports teams, locker rooms, changing areas, prisons, shelters, and even language itself in the name of inclusion. And if they object, they are accused of intolerance.

A real man doesn’t bully women into silence.

A real man doesn’t explain to women why their discomfort is less important than someone else’s feelings.

A real man doesn’t demand that girls spend years training for a sport only to compete against biological males because questioning the arrangement might hurt someone’s feelings.

A real man understands that respecting women requires listening to women.

But Talarico shows up and leans into the ideology that women are mistaken about their own interests.

Real Men Don’t Lie

Talarico once suggested that God is nonbinary.

At that point, we’re probably not debating masculinity anymore. We’re debating reality.

A real man doesn’t rewrite biology, reinvent language, and then move on to revising theology for good measure. He tells the truth, even when the truth is unfashionable.

God is not nonbinary. Reality is not negotiable. And no amount of political spin changes either one.

Which is why I suspect James Talarico and I would grade this entire discussion very differently.

James Talarico offered his definition of manhood. Consider this a peer review.
