Well, that was fast. After her disgusting anti-Semitic remarks, it really was just a matter of time before the shitstorm engulfed her. And considering she was apparently about to get canned from the WHCA, it seems like she was just trying to beat them to the punch.
Helen Thomas announced Monday that “she is retiring, effective immediately,” according to a statement from Hearst newspapers.
Her decision comes after her controversial remarks about Israel hit the blogosphere. She later apologized for her comments, saying she “deeply regretted” making them.
Ed Morrissey is reporting that apparently there are even more videos of her making anti-Semitic statements coming soon. If true, it’s really not all that shocking that she would try to run and hide from the controversy.
In all honesty, though, even without these remarks, Helen Thomas had to go. She isn’t even a reporter anymore, hasn’t been for a long time, and was just an opinion columnist, given front row seating at White House press briefings just by virtue of her being Helen Thomas. She’s a crazy old loon who need to go be crazy on her own, in private. She’s basically refused to disappear, and it was time for her to go. Yes, she said disgusting things. And I am sure she meant them. I doubt these are newfound perspectives for her, either. They’re probably half a century old. But she’s 90 now, and crazy enough to just spew whatever vile comes into her hideous little troll mind. One more time: she needed to just go away. And she has. Good riddance.
She should be sent back where she came from.
I’ll buy a burqua.
She’ll be back. I have no doubt that we haven’t seen the last of her cheerful mug.
She won’t be missed in some senses, but I think her abrupt retirement only serves to makes future Jew-haters in the media more cautious and measured in their comments…..when a simple ‘Go back to the ovens’ was all they meant to say.
Instead, they’ll simply couch their anti-semitism in terms of ‘anti-Zionism’ (like many of the charming commenters that popped out of the woodwork last week) and be more discreet.
On a more positive note, this will enable her to spend more time with her family.
