Last night was the one and only gubernatorial debate between Governor Ron DeSantis and Representative Charlie Crist . The debate between the current and former governors was, blessedly, only one hour, but it felt much longer. While the crowds for Desantis and Crist were both ready to yell and cheer at every moment, it seemed some in the Crist crowd had cowbells. This debate did not need more cowbell. The candidates supplied all the needed cowbell, thank you very much. It would have been easier to focus on the candidates without the crowd. At least one member of the Crist Crew was removed from the premises.
According to the Twitterbots, DeSantis looked uncomfortable out of his element. That’s not what I saw. DeSantis looked like he was in pain, like maybe gas? I am just being honest. Crist, on the other hand, had a oscillating fan by his podium, but was still sweating, wiping his forehead with his hand, and hacking up a lung. And, while we are at it, the moderator Liz Quirantes must have been auditioning for Fox News Channel, or at least her false eyelashes were.
Here for your elucidation is the DeSantis/Crist Gubernatorial Debate:
OPENING SHOTS
The first question, allegedly written by a viewer, was about the lack of affordable housing in Florida. I will stipulate here that, if it weren’t for the influx of people from Blue States, Florida wouldn’t have as much of an affordable housing issue. Charlie Crist answered that he believes in a woman’s right to choose. Crist then said the lack of affordable housing was because DeSantis took his “eye off the ball” and was too busy running for President.
DeSantis countered with the influx of new residents. DeSantis said that it wouldn’t have happened if Crist had his way. Crist sent DeSantis a letter in July, 2020 telling him to shut down the state. Amazingly, Crist said that when he was Governor, he never shutdown schools and businesses. Uh whut? We had a once a century pandemic when Crist was governor? I don’t remember that. Crist also called out DeSantis for bullying school children who were wearing masks. Kim wrote about this when it happened. That was not bullying.
MIDDLE ROUNDS
The DeSantis for President issue came up. From the Orlando Sentinel:
Crist, a Democrat, asked DeSantis twice whether he would commit to serving all four years of a second term. DeSantis didn’t answer either time.
“You talk about Joe Biden a lot,” Crist said. “I understand, you think you’re going to be running against him. I can see how you might get confused. But you’re running for governor. I have a question for you. Why don’t you look in the eyes of the people of the state of Florida and say to them if you’re reelected, you will serve a full four-year term as governor. Yes or no?”
“I know that Charlie’s interested about talking about 2024 and Joe Biden,” DeSantis said. “But I want to make things very clear, the only worn-out donkey I’m looking to put out to pasture is Charlie Crist.”
DeSantis did NOT answer the question, but given how bad Crist looked, worn-out donkey was a good analogy.
The closest that Crist came to landing one on DeSantis was the Martha’s Vineyard escapade:

I doubt that DeSantis lied to the one year old baby, but I would hardly call a flight to Martha’s Vineyard inhumane. I don’t care for the place, but inhumane? And, all Democrats ever talk about is Comprehensive Immigration Reform, which is code for “We ain’t doing nothing.” Pay attention whenever a Democrat mentions Comprehensive Immigration Reform.
SAVED BY THE BELL
There was much more on transgenders/gender affirming surgery, abortion, hate and taxes. It was all boilerplate talking points. I was glad when the debate ended. There was plenty for both sides. Crist, who is a cretin, got in some good shots. DeSantis, who is a good man, looked like he needed an antacid. I hope he got some relief. Maybe he just had a headache from the cowbell.

Thanks – love your article and your blog. Just wanted to say under “opening shots” 2nd paragraph I think you meant to say DeSantis when you wrote “once in a century.. when crist was governor”.
I love when Sarah links you – thanks for all you do!
I understand the rules of the debate were such that the candidates were not permitted to directly question their opponents. That would explain DeSantis’s failure to reply.
