So much for a clean CR (continuing resolution). It failed the House vote. That’s ok according to Chuck Schumer. He wants the original 1500 page pork-filled bill back on the table.
Senate Majority Leader Chuck Schumer is urging Speaker Mike Johnson to return to the original government funding deal that President-elect Donald Trump killed earlier this week, after the new Trump-backed plan was soundly defeated on the House floor Thursday evening.
“It’s a good thing the bill failed in the House, and now it’s time to go back to the bipartisan agreement we came to,” Schumer said.
Senate leadership on both sides of the aisle has been deferring to Johnson to chart a path forward.
Schumer has shown no sign of moving his own continuing resolution in an attempt to jam the House, and doing so wouldn’t be speedy. Government funding runs out on Friday night and the chances of a shutdown appear increasingly likely.
Of course, everyone is pointing fingers of blame at everyone else. And yammering about GOP billionaires (Elon and Vivek) gaming the system. What the Democrats, who have been in total messaging lockstep, want back all the goodies they loaded into the original bill. Some of which Deanna pointed out here.
Of course, the Democrats have also been whining about how the poor farmers and those still dealing with the devastation in Maui and North Carolina are going to be left out in the cold. Except funding for farmers and disaster relief was in BOTH bills. Yet the Democrats (except for two of them) voted NO on the clean CR.
You sure about that?

Because, I am 100% positive how it compares to leaving them homeless and out in the cold for months, and then haggling over garbage subsidies as a condition to getting them help just days before Christmas.
But here’s good ole Chuck Schumer pandering to his base and demanding the original bill be put back on the table.
Does he realize that will give all of us even MORE time to go through the thing and point out all the pork that’s in it??
What was in the new bill, the one that was only 116 pages? Here’s some of it.
According to reports, top-line takeaways from the new deal include a three-month CR, two-year suspension of the debt ceiling until January 2027, a “clean” farm bill package, $110 billion disaster package, clean health extenders without pharmacy benefit manager reform, PAYGO Scorecard wiped to zero, and no E15 provisions in a blow to the ethanol industry.
Yet the Democrats and 31 Republicans voted no. Thus, Chuck considers this a win and will tout it as such even if the government does end up shutting down.
By the way, I want to know who the 35 Republicans are that didn’t vote.
What’s laughable about this is that the Democrats were also whining about the fact that they weren’t privy to the negotiations of the new CR, all 116 pages of it, which is why they voted against the bill.
“There was no discussion. This was a take it or leave it [situation]. You know the 72-hour rule, this is the 72-second rule. They just posted [the bill],” he told The Post when asked whether there was communication from Republicans during the drafting of the plan B deal.
Other Democrats similarly expressed unity in opposition to the American Relief Act. Some complained about the debt ceiling provision, fretting that Republicans were trying to make it easier to cut taxes when they claim the trifecta.
“To put this on at this point, without consulting us or talking to us is just pretty unfortunate. We have a deal — it was a bipartisan deal,” Pete Aguilar (D-Calif.) Chair of the House Democratic Caucus told reporters. “They should honor the deal.”
Ok, that’s just hilarious. THEY DIDN’T TALK TO US!!! How dare they??!! And, oh my goodness gracious, there might be tax cuts?? Oh. The. Horror. *I’m for any and all tax cuts thank you very much!
That said, you just know that Chuck Schumer is gleeful about getting his favorite goodies dropped into a revised Continuing Resolution as well as crafting the message that this was all Elon, Vivek, and Trump’s fault. Those darned billionaires. How dare they speak as American citizens and point out the crap the government does!
Here’s an idea and I think it’s a great one!
This isn’t complicated.

Separate the bills and vote on them individually.
one vote on the clean CR
one vote on the debt limit
one vote on disaster relief
one vote on farm bailouts
Radical right? Individual bills for each issue.
Of course, the Democrats won’t even entertain that idea! Unfortunately I think some Republicans won’t either.
That said, I certainly don’t want to hand Chuck all the pork that he desires. Furthermore, I’m not a fan of the fact that we are deeply in debt and increasing the debt ceiling gives me hives.
We are either fiscally conservative or not.

An unlimited increase in the debt ceiling for 2 years is not fiscally conservative and should be rejected. https://t.co/7F1UzkC9tb
Here’s the thing, the Democrats had the majority in the House and Senate for most of Joe Biden’s term. They had AMPLE opportunity to put together a budget and get something passed. They did not. This budget crisis and looming government shut down is THEIR responsibility as well.
Jeffries: In our nation's history, 25% of our nation's debt was accumulated during the four years of the former president, 25%. How dare you lecture America about fiscal responsibility ever. pic.twitter.com/I9bj8fu6SE

Hakeem needs to look in the mirror.
Chuck Schumer wants to start over with the original bill. No, what he wants to do is add more pork into the CR and create more government, and increase the Swamp.

What if you gave a Government Shutdown and nobody came?
This is probably the worst time to threaten the great tragedies which will occur, but like Climate Change Catastrophes, never seem to happen. It’s Christmas-New Years. Most federal offices are largely shutdown anyway.
Then on January 3d, the Republicans take control of the Senate. What are the Democrats going to do, vote against a CR? If you are worried about people suffering in N.C. (covered by the stream lined CR) refusing to vote for it because it doesn’t include a $50K pay raise for members of Congress will be a well-remembered campaign issue in 2years. Being the Party of Pork and Obstruction won’t play well for Chuckie and his pals.
Even the 116 pages was WAY too long. As noted above, stop these omnibus bills.. all funding should be single purpose, split it up as defined above, then let the chips fall where they may. “republicans” voting against this, or failing to vote should be primaried at the first opportunity.
These swamp critters need to be brought back to the reality that they serve WE THE PEOPLE, not themselves! Ones like Pelosi, AOC, etc who have massively increased their personal wealth, FAR above what their salaries provide should be investigated, and if appropriate, prosecuted for fraud.
