Chad Wolf, the acting Secretary of the Department of Homeland Security, is the latest official to leave his position in the Trump Administration with just over a week to go. Mr. Wolf cited the ongoing court cases claiming that he was illegally appointed to his position as the reason for his resignation. The fact that Chad Wolf criticized Donald Trump for the breach at the Capitol last week probably didn’t help.
The 44 year old Wolf, has worked for several Republican Senators, been a lobbyist and moved up through positions of increasing responsibility in the Department of Homeland Security. During his decade as a lobbyist, he worked for the now shuttered Wexler and Walker. This time at DHS, he succeeded Kevin McAleenan, who was also appointed and not confirmed by the Senate. Some of the governmental organizations reporting to the Department of Homeland Security include: Border Security, Citizenship and Immigration Services, Election Security (???), Human Trafficking, and Immigration and Customs Enforcement.
Early last evening, Chad Wolf announced that he was stepping down, but not leaving the Department. He was confirmed for the position of Under-Secretary for Policy at DHS and will move back into that position. You can read his full resignation statement here. The opening paragraph reads:
Dear Colleagues,Effective at 11:59 p.m. today, I am stepping down as your Acting Secretary. I am saddened to take this step, as it was my intention to serve the Department until the end of this Administration. Unfortunately, this action is warranted by recent events, including the ongoing and meritless court rulings regarding the validity of my authority as Acting Secretary. These events and concerns increasingly serve to divert attention and resources away from the important work of the Department in this critical time of a transition of power.
Good bye and don’t let the door hit you whether the Good Lord split you. Remember how I added question marks to the election security title above? Yeah, Chris Krebs, who called this the most secure election ever, and was fired by President Trump, reported to Chad Wolf. The election was a clusterfeck of unsolicited mail-in ballots, questionable data dumps, and not existent chain of custody. I could believe Donald Trump really lost if Chad Wolf and Chris Krebs had actually done their jobs. These two bureaucratic nimrods had months to secure the election and did nothing.
I think after Chad Wolf opened his yap and criticized Trump over the Capitol breach the other day he had to go. He said:
Acting Homeland Security Secretary Chad Wolf on Thursday identified Trump’s supporters as the ones perpetrating the violence at the Capitol on Wednesday and called on the president to condemn it.
“What transpired yesterday was tragic and sickening. While I have consistently condemned political violence on both sides of the aisle, specifically violence directed at law enforcement, we now see some supporters of the president using violence as a means to achieve political ends. This is unacceptable. These violent actions are unconscionable, and I implore the president and all elected officials to strongly condemn the violence that took place yesterday,” Wolf said in a statement.
And, of course, Donald Trump did condemn the Capitol breach, even though we still don’t know what really happened or who organized the breach. By why let facts get in the way of saving your career.
Gloria Borger and Dana Bash, speaking to Wolf Blitzer on CNN, took up for Chad Wolf.
This volatile time, ladies? Chad Wolf proved himself incompetent at election security and Homeland Security. Why would you want him to stay. Except, he is not leaving. Just taking a demotion.
The Deep State protects itself and its denizens. Chad Wolf is just one of the denizens.
