Columbus Ohio was thrown into the national spotlight late Wednesday night after a 13 year old boy was shot by police.

Police in Columbus, Ohio, say officers were responding to a report of an armed robbery Wednesday night when they encountered a person who pulled what appeared to be a gun from his waistband.

An officer opened fire, hitting this person “multiple times,” the Columbus police said. He was pronounced dead not long afterward.

Early Thursday, police said the person killed was 13-year-old Tyre King. Detectives investigating the shooting scene said they found what appeared to be a handgun, but “upon further inspection, it was determined to be a BB gun with an attached laser site,” according to a statement from the Columbus police.

Understandably the police are facing major scrutiny for their actions and the response from the community is all over the map, nor is it pretty.

However, lets take a look at the details. Once you delve into those, the story becomes far more than just a ‘cops shot a black kid just because’ narrative that the Black Lives Matter is attempting to shove at everyone.

1. The 911 call reported a robbery by group of ARMED teens
2. Dispatch was told that at least one teen was carrying a pistol that looked like a Ruger
3. King was on the run with one of his buddies, 19 year old Demetrius Braxton
4. When officers caught up to the two, King turned around and pulled a gun out of his pocket.

Think about this for a minute. A call comes into the police. Someone has been robbed. The description is that the group who robbed the person are ARMED. Just those facts alone are enough for police to be on edge while responding to the call and places everyone involved on a higher level of danger than compared to a purse snatching.

None of them are.

The pistols on the top and bottom are BB guns equipped with lasers similar to the one recovered from the body of 13 year-old suspect Tyree King last night. They are commonly sold in stores and online for less than $60. The realistic gun in the middle is one that might be familiar to you. That is the exact gun recovered from Tamir Rice, the 5’7″, 195 lbs assault suspect shot and killed as he attempted to draw a gun from his pants—on camera—in Cleveland on November 22, 2014.

As with Tamir Rice, Michael Brown, Alton Sterling, and far too many others, the true facts have already been obscured by the narrative of police hate blacks. Far too many are ignoring the fact that the gun Tyre King was running around with looked SO REAL that police felt they had to act. Far too many are ignoring the fact that the weapons used in many armed robberies are highly realistic looking BB and Airsoft guns. So realistic looking that even noted experts have a difficult time discerning the difference.

While the city pleas for calm, others held a vigil yesterday.

The officer who shot Tyre King, now identified as 9 year veteran Bryan Mason, is likely second guessing every step of his response. Good officers do that. But that doesn’t seem to matter. The answers regarding police training and behavior are being demanded. Use of deadly force is under scrutiny once again.

Lets ask some additional questions. Uncomfortable questions. Why did Tyre King have a BB gun with an attached laser sight? Why was a 13 year old running around with a 19 year old? Have any in that group of boys been in trouble before? Why was Tyre, a student at a local STEM school, involved in a robbery in the first place?

Did Tyre King have to die? No. Should he have been involved in committing an armed robbery. No. Is it solely the fault of the police that this 13 year old boy is dead? Truthfully? No.
