Star Wars T-Shirt Gets Banned From Texas School For “Violent” Image

There is a disturbance in the Force, and it is called… hoplophobia. A 7th grade student in Rosenberg, Texas, has been banned from wearing his new “Star Wars: The Force Awakens” T-shirt at school because administrators have gone over the bend in political correctness.

Stop the presses, a stormtrooper has a blaster!!!

Colton Southern from Rosenberg had worn the shirt to school on Thursday which is emblazoned with the Star Wars: The Force Awakens logo and features a Stormtrooper holding a gun.
Administrations at George Junior High School told him to cover up the shirt, which he was told was banned because it has a picture of ‘what in the movie is a weapon,’ KTRK reported.

The district’s secondary school handbook apparently details potential violations of dress code, which includes ‘symbols oriented toward violence,’ a Lamar Consolidated Independent School District spokesperson said.
Administrators said Colton was not reprimanded and was only required to zip up his jacket.
However, they told KTRK that they could have required him to change, assigned him in-school suspension or have had him face other consequences.

Clearly, none of the administrators have ever seen a Star Wars movie.

And if this school is going to be consistent, then every single Star Wars shirt with a lightsaber on it will also have to be banned, because that’s a weapon. So, either the school is serious about their “violent symbols,” or they are just politically correct hoplophobes.

Still, Star Wars t-shirts are becoming more and more politically correct. My almost-twelve-year-old daughter wanted a new shirt ahead of the movie’s release this coming weekend (my husband already has tickets for himself and our oldest two kids to go see it), and we found a kind of fun Princess Leia T-shirt at Target. It was no longer available, but I noticed something funny about the image.

Look very closely at Leia’s hand there. There’s a blaster grip in it.

Because the original image came from this promotional photo shoot, and the blaster has been quietly airbrushed out.

There is a reason why Princess Leia is so popular, and her image as a woman who was willing to defend herself is a huge part of her popularity. My daughter opted for a different t-shirt, and she was so mad after seeing the airbrushed t-shirt that she insisted on one with Leia holding a blaster.

Why can’t grown-ups just let kids enjoy their movies, without projecting all of their prejudices and fears on them? I find their lack of common sense disturbing.
