Navy SEAL Lt. Commander Dan Crenshaw won his election to Congress on Tuesday, and got a full apology from Pete Davidson late Saturday night during the “Weekend Update” segment on Saturday Night Live. It’s been quite a week for the Representative-elect.
If you missed it, Dan Crenshaw became a household name last weekend when comedian Pete Davidson took a shot at his eyepatch. Crenshaw lost that eye while on his third combat tour in Afghanistan. However, he handled the tasteless comment with a great deal of dignity, and his reaction is what most likely prompted this on-air apology by Davidson – which was followed by some seriously hilarious roasting of the comedian, as well as striking exactly the right tone in clearing the air on Veterans Day weekend.
This week, Crenshaw joined Davidson behind the “Weekend Update” desk to bury the hatchet.
“In what I’m sure was a huge shock for people who know me, I made a poor choice last week,” Davidson said before Crenshaw appeared. “I made a joke about Lieutenant Commander Dan Crenshaw, and on behalf of the show and myself, I apologize.”
He added, “I mean this from the bottom of my heart. It was a poor choice of words. The man is a war hero and he deserves all of the respect in the world. And if any good came of this, maybe it was that for one day the left and the right finally came together to agree on something: that I’m a dick.”
When Crenshaw sat down next to Davidson, he said, “Apology accepted,” before an Ariana Grande song started playing from his pocket. “Oh, do you know her?” he joked.
Then, since Davidson got to make fun of Crenshaw, he gave the congressman-elect a chance to take some shots at him. “This is Pete Davidson. He looks like if the meth from Breaking Bad was a person,” Crenshaw said. “He looks like a troll doll with a tapeworm.” And then, “He looks like Martin Short in The Santa Clause 3. By the way, one of these people was actually good on SNL.”
“You’re not wrong,” Davidson replied.
“But seriously, there’s a lot of lessons to learn here,” Crenshaw said. “Not just that the left and the right can still agree on some things, but also this: Americans can forgive one another. We can remember what brings us together as a country and still see the good in each other. This is Veterans Day weekend, which means that it’s a good time for every American to connect with a veteran.”
He advised all Americans to say “Never forget” to a veteran, “implying that as an American, you are in it with them, not separated by some imaginary barrier between civilians and veterans, but connected together as grateful, fellow Americans.”
“And never forget those we lost on 9/11, heroes like Pete’s father,” he added, paying tribute to Davidson’s father, who died in the September 11th attacks. “So I’ll just say, Pete, never forget.”
And so, what started as an awful joke just became a Very Good Moment.
This was the right way to go about this by everybody. It’s rare & it won’t last. https://t.co/UdeEC67sF3

In the full clip @DanCrenshawTX pays tribute to Pete Davidson’s dad, who died on 9/11. I did not know that. I’m reminded of the quote, “Be kind, for everyone you meet is fighting a hard battle.” https://t.co/WW3qzMbuKA

Thank you, Representative-elect Dan Crenshaw, for being a class act. You definitely earned the last laugh on Saturday Night Live.

Excellent job, Lt (Cmdr) Dan.
As is now all to common conservatives are mocked incessantly by the left with ‘over the top’ stereotypes. When the outrageousness stoops so low that the insults hurt more than benefit the left and are forced to ‘apologize’ they expect us to believe their sincerity and that they really really mean it, this time. Well I, for one, don’t. Tomorrow will bring more attacks against us as equally outrageous and ‘over the top’ as the left tries to one up each other with their hatred for us. Phoniness is an inherent trait peculiar to them as they have so often demonstrated and this SNL blip is nothing more than a speed bump in their quest for totalitarianism and one party rule.

As a retired Coastie, for whom the oath to support and defend my Constitution has no expiration date, Commander Crenshaw’s gesture reminds me of the best of my fellow vet brothers.
Bravo Zulu, Commander!

I’m on the other side of the Pond, and the opposite hemisphere, so I don’t get US Television (not that I actually WANT to). So, this is my first view of SNL’s Pete Davidson. Irrespective of what he actually said or did, speaking as an ex-Pom, may I comment that he looks like a complete cnut.
