This has been a Ted Cruz week here in the Kansas City area, as the Kansas caucuses will be held Saturday.

On Wednesday night, I attended a Cruz rally at Johnson County Community College in Overland Park, a suburb of Kansas City. JCCC’s Yardley Hall, which typically is used for concerts, was completely filled. An adjoining auditorium was used as overflow, and it was announced that even that was packed. About 300 people had to be turned away.

I was fortunate to have a front row seat for Cruz’s 45-minute address, a message which prompted conservative author Jack Cashill, who also attended the event, to ask, “Why would a conservative vote for anyone else?” Cashill continued, “Cruz represents conservative values more consistently, intelligently and forcefully than any candidate in the field.”

Then Thursday night I attended a private debate watch party at a local pizza restaurant. Attending were various Kansas state representatives who support Ted Cruz, and other Cruz supporters. Seated to my left was Rev. Rafael Cruz, Ted Cruz’s father, and it was an honor to meet and visit with him. Before the debate began, he held a prayer, and discussed how clergy had been influential in the American Revolution. Rev. Cruz was also kind enough to have his picture taken with anyone who wanted one.

After the debate ended, he opined that this was Ted’s best debate performance to date, and I agree with him.

Rev. Cruz was gracious enough to allow me to record a brief interview. I asked him why Americans should vote for Ted, and he was most eloquent, precise, and compelling in his response, evoking the need to protect the Constitution.

Here at Victory Girls, we do not as a group endorse a candidate. However, this writer has been intrigued by Sen. Ted Cruz since he first emerged on the political scene in 2012 as a candidate for Senator from Texas. I admire the intellectual firepower he brings to a debate, and his accomplishments in having argued nine times before the Supreme Court as Texas Solicitor General, which include a defense of 2nd Amendment rights in District of Columbia v. Heller. Ted Cruz is not a man who engenders rage among his supporters, and who does not promote tearing down his political party, but wants instead to return the nation to its First Principles and its Constitutional moorings.

Kim is a pint-sized patriot who packs some big contradictions. She is a Baby Boomer who never became a hippie, an active Republican who first registered as a Democrat (okay, it was to help a sorority sister's father in his run for sheriff), and a devout Lutheran who practices yoga. Growing up in small-town Indiana, now living in the Kansas City metro, Kim is a conservative Midwestern gal whose heart is also in the Seattle area, where her eldest daughter, son-in-law, and grandson live. Kim is a working speech pathologist who left school system employment behind to subcontract to an agency, and has never looked back. She describes her conservatism as falling in the mold of Russell Kirk's Ten Conservative Principles. Don't know what they are? Google them!
