A pox on both your parties

A pox on both your parties

Both the GOP and Democratic parties have a problem.  The presumptive nominees come with more baggage than the Delta Terminal at O’Hare Airport. Both Clinton and Trump are horrible people who did very bad things. Hillary should be indicted for both her inaction at Benghazi and for secrecy violations and Trump for shady business practices. But our two parties and the reality tv saturated public put these two loathsome individuals up for election.

Bad and worse Trump has a temporary advantage thanks to the decision by the FBI to not indict his deplorable opponent. But Trump is too busy retweeting white supremacist garbage to respond effectively. As the AP said here

It was an opportunity for Donald Trump to hone his message and focus his ire on Hillary Clinton’s emails and the criminal indictment he and his fellow Republicans say she deserved and unjustly dodged.

Trump missed an opportunity to look like a contender.  Against Hillary’s bloodstained hands and secrecy breaches.  But Trump decided to talk tweets.

Instead, the presumptive Republican presidential nominee chose to interrupt his Wednesday night rally with an aggressive defense of a weekend tweet condemned as anti-Semitic, reminding anyone who may have been watching of the criticism that his campaign turns a blind eye to bigotry and attracts the support of white supremacists.

Actions speak louder than words and the alt-right got Trump’s implied message:

Duke said Tuesday on his radio show that there was “no way” the star depicted in the Clinton tweet was anything other than Star of David, and he tweeted out his own version of the image with an unmistakably anti-Semitic message.

If Trump and his staff did due diligence and checked before retweeting that might have avoided this whole fiasco. But they did not. And these are the smart people surrounding Trump?  More from the alt-right pit of slime.

Johnson, the treasurer of the white nationalist group that ran the pro-Trump robo-calls during the primary and is planning to air television ads backing him, said that while Trump may not be trying to win their support, they’re nevertheless attracted to his message. He’s not bothered by the fact Trump dumped him as a delegate.

But you say Hillary is worse?  That is true but Trump is not gaining any support despite her evil doing. Kristin Soltis Anderson said here

With yesterday’s FBI declaration that Clinton, despite egregious recklessness with national security, ought not be charged criminally, Clinton has now gotten past James Comey and now must only get through Donald Trump on her path to the White House. While it is four months to Election Day, Trump will need to dramatically reverse his current standing in order to seriously compete.

Even with this national security breach, Trump is not gaining support.

Trump is, at this point, extremely unlikely to be president of the United States. So when the dust settles on November 9th, what will the Republican Party do in the wake of this defeat? Does the GOP really need to hit rock bottom in order to reform itself into an institution capable of actually promoting ideas and candidates who connect with the values of most Americans?

Frankly both parties put forth the worst of the worst. Both candidates.  Where do we go from here?  A question we should be asking.

I’ll always be proud of The United States of America. But I’m also embarrassed that these two assclowns are the best we can come up with as presidential candidates. Good job, America.
