Who had this on their Bingo Card of Life? In Port Townsend, Washington, a YMCA expelled an 80-year-old grandmother. Her offense? She objected to a man being in the women’s shower area.
Port Townsend, Washington, is a quaint, Victorian-style town on the tip of a peninsula that extends into Puget Sound. It’s a small place, and has been using the community Mountain View pool in partnership with the YMCA for 35 years.
Port Townsend, Washington. Personal collection.
Julie Jaman, a Port Townsend resident for 40 years, has been a member of the community pool for 35 years. But last month, as she stood naked in the shower after her swim, she heard a man’s voice. Not only did she feel vulnerable — with only a thin curtain between her and the man — but she saw him help small girls peel off their swimsuits to use the toilets.
So Jaman’s Mama Bear instincts kicked in, and she asked the man, who was dressed in a woman’s swimsuit, “Do you have a penis?”
To which he replied: “That’s none of your business.” Jaman fired back, “Get out of here, right now!”
Now in another time — like maybe five years ago — this grandmother would’ve been a hero. But not at the YMCA facility in Port Townsend. The facility’s aquatic manager, Rowen DeLuna, was standing nearby, and when Julie Jaman told her about the man in the women’s showers, DeLuna didn’t respond the way you think she should have. According to Jaman, the manager said:
“You’re discriminating and you can’t use the pool anymore and I’m calling the police.”
Jaman then found out that the man, who goes by the name of “Clementine,” is an employee, even though he was not wearing any identification. Rightfully angry, the grandmother got dressed to go, but once in the foyer of the Y, another staff member told her she couldn’t leave. The police were coming to arrest her because she had “not abided by our principles and values.” To which Jaman replied:
“Bullshit! I’m going to the police right now. I want help and I need it immediately.”
Julie Jaman promptly went next door to the Port Townsend police department and filed a complaint.
The day following the incident, police officer Marc Titterness (yes, that’s his name, and no, I’m not making it up) called Julie Jaman. Unfortunately, he didn’t appear to have been much help. In a police call summary, Titterness told the Port Townsend Free Press that “Julie … heard a man’s voice and observed what appeared to be a man in a female bathing suit assisting a small female child.” She then “had an emotional response to a strange male being in the bathroom and helping a young girl take off her bathing suit.”
“Emotional response.” Gee, ya think?
So the officer and Jaman “had a long discussion about the complex issue.”
Well, that’s helpful. Or not.
Meanwhile, an anonymous caller from the YMCA had also contacted the police. This caller — who refused to be identified — claimed:
“Clementine was in the bathroom with a child in the day camp and Julie asked if she had a penis and started screaming at her to get out.”
But that wasn’t the first call from this anonymous individual. He/she/whatever called repeatedly, telling police that “Julie” has “been asked to leave and is refusing,” and that Julie “was screaming at employees and calling names and refusing to leave.”
Jaman also contacted CEO Wendy Bart, the head of the regional YMCA organization, and spoke with her personally. However, Jaman didn’t get the support she was expecting. Bart stood by the actions of the staff, and also told Jaman that she should’ve known better. All those pride flags that are hanging up in the building, along with signs about “inclusion” should’ve given her a clue. Besides, said Bart, one of the staff claimed that Jaman told “Clementine” that “You’re going to stick your fucking penis in those little girls” — a statement Jaman vehemently denied.
Julie Jaman wasn’t done with the YCMA in Port Townsend, though. On August 1, she and some supportive friends picketed outside the Mountain View pool, arguing that the YMCA has promised “the addition of family changing rooms/all-gender bathrooms…” but instead “took over the traditional binary areas.” They want the Y to have three changing areas: male, female, and “gender-free.”
Later Jaman, along with other concerned citizens, addressed the Port Townsend City Council:
“The staff seems to have received little training on how to handle reactions to such radical cultural changes, particularly for the most vulnerable – older female patrons and children who may be exposed to inappropriate behavior; the dignity and safety of unsuspecting women, who have trusted to use these facilities for many years. This is not right.”
Jaman’s fight for the right of females to be free of men in private spaces got traction. In fact, Laura Ingraham addressed the Port Townsend issue on her Friday broadcast on Fox News.
So what does the law in the State of Washington have to say about this gender kerfuffle?
According to state law:
“If another person expresses concern or discomfort about a person who uses a facility that is consistent with that person’s expression or gender identity, the person expressing discomfort should be directed to a separate or gender-neutral facility, if available.”
Julie Jaman is not conservative. She’s a Democrat, in fact, and says she’s not even a Christian. But when a nonreligious liberal woman from deep blue Washington State can’t abide the lunacy of the transgender ideology, then there’s a serious problem in the new religion of Genderism.
Meanwhile, if you’re a woman visiting the tourist town of Port Townsend, Washington, don’t go to the YMCA. There’s a good chance that “Clementine” and his penis might be hanging out in the women’s showers.

“Julie Jaman is not conservative. She’s a Democrat, in fact, and says she’s not even a Christian. ”
Up until I read that part, I had sympathy for the grandmom. Now, while I still support her position in this instance, I have no sympathy at all for the woman herself. The politicians and policies she’s been voting for are what created this situation. She’s made her bed, let her lie in it!
“Hanging out”, I get it!!
Port Townsend, Washington, is a quaint, Victorian-style town on the tip of a peninsula that extends into Puget Sound
IOW, a town filled with noses-in-the-air elitist Progressives.
Now in another time — like maybe five years ago — this grandmother would’ve been a hero.
In another place that dude would have been suffering from kinetic energy poisoning.
The police were coming to arrest her because she had “not abided by our principles and values.”
Sorry, b***h, but the police don’t get to arrest anyone for not abiding by your principles and values. The best you can do is have her cited for trespassing if she does NOT leave. And keeping her there? Yes, that’s called an unlawful detention and is a felony equivalent of kidnapping. (Which, again, in another place would get you shot, since it’s a violent felony.)
Oh yeah, and someone who thinks they can have you arrested for “not abiding by their principles and values” is a tyrant and should be soundly beaten until they understand they are NOT in the ‘chain of command’. (Firefly reference there.)
a statement Jaman vehemently denied
And, if she had somehow recorded the incident, she would now be in jail for kiddie porn, I’m betting. Which would be the absolutely most ironic reduction ad absurdum possible.
says she’s not even a Christian
Well, neither is the YMCA, so she’s got that going for her.
(The Young Men’s Christian Association changed their name a bunch of years ago to simply the abbreviation – kinda like NAMBLA and NARAL did – and did away with the “Christian” aspect of … well, everything they do.)
Texas has a statute that protects senior citizens from threats arising from private individuals acting under color of authority. YMCA doing this would likely be a violation
I’m from here. PT is Berkeley-North. All of the most bizarre ideas from California, etc… arrive here and find a home. We had the “Black Lives Matter” slogan painted on the main street when that was fashionable. No Republicans win elections here. The GOP party leader once ran for office as a Democrat.
This is a “Blue on Blue” situation. The left finds its insane rules good for others, but when applied to them, they find them onerous. I don’t know her, but my guess from the “non-Christian, non-conservative” statement is that she is a dyed-in-the-wool leftist.
Pass the popcorn.
