The MSM seems shocked that veterans overwhelmingly are against Obama.
The Obama campaign had been hoping that veterans and their families — especially among the post-Sept. 11 generation that served in Iraq and Afghanistan — would be part of their path to victory: They’re a high turn-out demographic and concentrated in battleground states, with nearly 1 million each in North Carolina, Ohio and Virginia, and 1.6 million in Florida.
But recent polls make clear that the president’s campaign is losing the battle. Even as Obama leads in Colorado, Florida, Ohio and Virginia, Mitt Romney is up by double digits among veterans in those states. Nationwide, he’s got a commanding 20-percentage-point lead over Obama and has even overtaken the president with younger veterans.
Obama’s campaign has been trying to improve on a historical Democratic disadvantage on national security and among veterans by touting the killing of Osama bin Laden, ending Iraq combat operations and winding down the war in Afghanistan. They’ve also been talking up the administration’s attention to veterans’ benefits and efforts spearheaded by first lady Michelle Obama, hoping to appeal not just to the troops but to the spouses and other military family members who have coped with long separations and multiple deployments.
Using examples like the killing of Osama bin Laden? First strike against Obama for vets. Believe it or not, service members aren’t likely to appreciate Obama’s constant attempts to take credit for what Navy SEALs did.
Second strike? Trying to claim he’s paid special attention to veterans’ benefits. If by “special attention” you mean slashing Tricare benefits while increasing the cost, then sure, he’s been paying “special attention”.
The third strike is that Obama quite obviously does not understand service members at all — and nor does he care to try to. Treating vets as some kind of victim class, acting as if he’s the post-9/11 military’s savior because he’s withdrawing from Iraq and Afghanistan, forcing service members to get out when they don’t want to… none of these things are really all that endearing to vets. And their Commander-in-Chief has done all of these things, and then expects to be applauded by the service members he’s screwing over.
With massive cuts to the Department of Defense, the worst foreign policy since Jimmy Carter, the most ridiculous rules of engagement ever forced onto our military, and an economy so bad that service members are scared to get out, and the question is, why would any veteran support Obama?
Why would any military person vote for this Marxist unless it were for racial issues. What he envisions for the United States is totally different from what millions have served and hundreds of thousands have died for! Our military personnel are far more aware of national and world history and problems than the average voter. Obama’s proposed military cuts will do irreparable harm to our ability to protect ourselves from future enemies who will be much more powerful than any we have faced since WWII.
