Fresh off being one of the last to see Pope Francis alive, just saying, Vice President J.D. Vance, and his family, are in India. Indian officials and the press will be looking for any sign from the Second Family to see if they can divine how tariff talks are going. The Veep is personable enough and knows Prime Minister Modi of India but he has secret weapons: his lights on bright and beautiful wife Usha and three adorable children.
Talk smack about President Trump all you want, but not for several generations have we had a child friendly White House like this one. It’s a shame the Vance children had to miss the White House Easter Egg Roll today, but they have three more years (and hopefully more). Trump not only colored with the children but signed their work if they wished:

Darn. I have never wanted to go to a White House Easter Egg Roll before.
Meanwhile, Vice President Vance and his family left Italy for India to visit Prime Minister Narendra Modi. The two men met in Paris at the AI Action Summit in February ahead of Mr. Modi’s four day visit to Washington. The featured image above this post is the two men sharing a comfortable moment. February was decades ago and the tariff issues have gotten, um, muddier. As the New York Times reported:
India is searching for any sign that it will be able to dodge the steep tariffs threatened by the Trump administration as it rushes to reorder global trade.
So on Monday, as Vice President JD Vance began a four-day visit, Indians closely examined the images that emerged for any clues — and many liked what they saw.
First there were Mr. Vance’s three young children, dressed in Indian attire as they stepped one by one from the airplane. Then there was the family photo outside a marble-and-sandstone temple, with Mr. Vance, his Indian American wife, Usha Vance, and their children draped in garlands. Capping it all was Mr. Vance’s warm embrace of Prime Minister Narendra Modi, who presented the Vance children with peacock feathers.
Holy smokes. Such drab words to convey so much emotion. Watch this video and I dare you not to become overcome:
Chief negotiators! Charm offensive. Of course, it’s the New York Times so they have to drop something nasty in the punchbowl:
Given the fickleness of Mr. Vance’s boss, President Trump, it is impossible to know whether these gauzy images indicate that the Trump administration is ready to strike a deal.
The writers of the New York Times only remember today’s talking points. Back in September of 2019, there were trade tensions between the United States and India. So, Texas held a “Howdy Modi” in Houston. Everything’s bigger in Texas. This article from NBC DFW was titled: “Trump, Modi Show Unity Between World’s Largest Democracies”. From the article:
Deafening drums marked the entrance of President Donald Trump and Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi as they clasped hands and walked across the stage in a packed Texas stadium Sunday, sending a message of unity between the world’s two largest democracies despite trade tensions.
But instead of dwelling on differences, Trump highlighted the growth of U.S. exports to India, the billions of dollars spent by India on U.S.-made defense equipment and joint military exercises with New Delhi.
“India has never invested in the United States like it is doing today,” Trump said, adding that “we’re doing the same thing in India.”
Back to the NY Times article. The Trump Team and the Modi Team worked out the outlines of where they want the tariff talks to go back in February. This visit by the Vance family was a chance to work further on where the agreement will go and, importantly, a chance for Prime Minister Modi to offer hospitality to his friend. Never underestimate that. Again from the Times:
But senior Indian officials and some analysts took Mr. Vance’s presence in India as a sign that the United States intended to continue working toward the bilateral trade agreement outlined by Mr. Trump and Mr. Modi when the Indian leader visited Washington in February.
“This visit is very significant, coming at a time when there is unease internationally about what the Trump administration has been doing to friendly countries, including India,” said Happymon Jacob, an associate professor of diplomacy and disarmament at Jawaharlal Nehru University in New Delhi. “This is a visit to reassure India that the relationship is not going to completely go astray.”
You can only react to this next part from the Times with “No. Duh”:
In recent years, India has sought to make its ties with the United States a pillar of its foreign policy strategy, as the American government looked to India to help counter a rising China.
But India has found itself on uncertain ground with Mr. Trump back in office. The president has both praised Mr. Modi’s leadership and harangued the Indian government for high tariffs that make it tough for U.S. companies to enter the market.
What’s uncertain about that. With friends, you let them know where you stand. You don’t let them run all over you or you won’t be friends anymore because they won’t respect you. Have the writers at the Times ever negotiated anything?
Usha Vance respected her Indian heritage, but dressed as a thoroughly woman. The details are from Remoulade Sauce who is an excellent sleuth.
US Vice President JD Vance along with his wife, Second Lady Usha Vance and their children, have arrived in India. The Vances are beginning a four-day visit to India.

Their weapon of choice is charm:

We shall see how these negotiations go.

I got the “dare” and I couldn’t do it, that was charming! It’s been a long hard constant struggle and charming has been so long gone. Thanks for that, so sweet and real.
I’m old enough to remember the very brief popularity of the “Nehru” jacket in the US. I actually thought they looked pretty good, even though I never owned one myself.
one of the last to see Pope Francis alive
You know Vance is just an undercover assassin for the forces of darkness, right?

One of the lefty morons out there actually twitted that the pope wouldn’t meet with Vance and sent out a cardinal or something to tell him to “Go away!” or some such. And he tweeted it with the pic of the pope shaking his hand. (Well, he was grasping it, at least.)
what the Trump administration has been doing to friendly countries
Here’s the problem. These “friendly” countries have often been friends as long as we’re buying the drinks. And springing for lunch. And we have to not mind what they say about us behind our backs to those other “friends” of theirs. A lot of our “friends” have been in an abusive relationship with us for decades. Setting those “friends” straight on how a proper relationship works is what Trump has been doing. Letting them know we’re not going to let them take advantage of us.
And that’s our “friends.” /eyeroll/
Have the writers at the Times ever negotiated anything?
Have the writers ever had actual friends? They’ve probably had buddies and they’ve had therapists, but they’ve probably never had actual friends.
