UC Berkeley Riots Signal Death of Free Speech

Last night, an event featuring Breitbart.com editor Milo Yiannopoulos at the University of California Berkeley was cancelled. Masked, black clad rioters claiming to be anti-fascists threatened lives and destroyed property. Milo is currently touring with his “Dangerous Faggot” show.

Anti-fascist rioters at the University of California at Berkeley

Milo Yiannopoulos, for those who don’t know, is gay, Greek-born, British and anti-political correctness. Although there are those who consider him an alt-right extremist. To me, he seems more of a basic free speech advocate. You know the whole “Life, Liberty and the pursuit of Happiness” (Declaration) and First Amendment (Constitution) concept. He is a more speech, rather than less speech kind of guy. More words, not forbidden words. He is anti-Social Justice Warriors.

Listen to Milo in his own words and then we will discuss further:

Violence is never justified. Milo is right. They are conflating ideas with action.

Now, Conservative, Libertarian and non-Social Justice Warrior types have been shouted down on college campuses for the last decade. The Progressive Left and Social Justice Warriors have upped the ante with violence and destruction.

I was not clear on why the Berkeley students shut down free speech or what they want. So, I went to Reason.com because they are Reason, right? I found this in the first paragraph of the Reason post:

Berkeley is burning tonight: the university campus that birthed the Free Speech Movement played host to a despicable display of violence and censorship Wednesday evening that culminated in the cancellation of a planned speech by controversial Breitbart tech editor Milo Yiannopoulos.

Ummm. Dear Reason: I am pretty sure the Founding Fathers birthed the Free Speech Movement about 200 years before the egg heads in Northern California. Sincerely, Me.

Also, from Reason:

Anti-Yiannopoulos protesters wearing black scarves over their faces hurled fireworks at the building where the alt-right leader was supposed to speak. They also tore down barricades and smashed windows. They used gasoline to start a significant fire on the street that threatened to engulf a nearby tree, and forced police to push people back. Authority figures deployed rubber bullets and tear gas in an attempt to control the situation. A student who attended the event told me that it seemed like the majority of the violent protesters were not students, but older, masked rioters from the “antifa” movement.

Antifa means Anti-fascists. The anti-fascists want to tell us what we can and cannot think. The anti-fascists want to tell us what we can and cannot read or hear.

This happened at a college campus. This happened at a place where knowledge is supposed to be imparted. Truth should be uncovered and discussed. This is happening at a lot of colleges and universities in the United States today. If you have a student and you are paying college tuition or taking out loans, this is what you are paying for. Congratulations and take a look at what you get for your money.

The “antifa” and Social Justice Warriors are the new “Thought Police”. These are Fascists in the mold of Hitler’s Brown Shirts. Disrupting gatherings and inciting violence.

Business Insider is reporting that President Donald Trump threatening to cut federal funding to Berkeley because of the violent riots last night. I have an idea. Parents of the United States of America don’t even let your offspring apply to colleges that shut down free speech, have safe spaces or make students “check their privilege”. Send them to a Junior College and maybe a trade school.

Today, U.C. Berkeley shuts down Milo Yiannopolous. Tomorrow, they may shut down the parents. They want your money. They don’t want you.

Well said Toni, it is interesting how they claim to want diversity and free speech, but they fail to mention that they will only allow it if it agrees with their world view. As a parent of a college age kid, this scares me, but thankfully, he recognizes it, and doesn’t want to go to a college like this, for just that reason.

(Showing my age) I remember back during the Hippie phase, it was interesting indeed to see all of those “yoots” who proclaimed and strutted their non-conformity with society as a whole —– and who all dressed and acted alike each other. (Send in the clones.)

I was always amused by that.

Reason is using the name they used for themselves. They were leftists then, and they’re leftists now, but that was what they called themselves.

Well, a lot of these folks are more anarchist than “anti-fascist”. They like to show up to riots because they get to throw crap and maybe burn something, and occasionally they get to burnish their street cred by getting arrested (’cause that proves they’re stickin’ it to The Man, or something).

Personally, when I read about them breaching the first set of barriers that was set up, then eventually breaching the third line (yes, they set up three rows of barriers, zip-tied together), I was wondering why they used pepper balls and not lead ball (though my choice would be JHP). When you’ve clearly set up limits and have to have armed officers protecting a place, once they cross the clear boundary – and especially once they cross the inner boundary and have already committed arson – you should be shooting to end a threat, not merely to “discourage” further participation.
Trust me, once you use more than pepper balls, they will get discouraged.

    GWB, 1st barrier= pepper ball, 2nd barrier=rock salt, 3rd barrier=JHP.. at least in a perfect world…

“They used gasoline to start a significant fire on the street that threatened to engulf a nearby tree . . ”

O.K., now they’ve gone too far. The Sierra Club will be all over them.

    • Toni Williams says:

Naw. The Sierra Club is a whatever necessary kind of group. They would burn down a forest to keep it from being developed.

A t-shirt worn by one of them read “PUNK.” That about says it.
