The PGA decided to move a tour date for golf tournament to Mexico City starting next year. Said tour was held in South Florida for the last 55 years on a course that is owned by one Donald Trump. Instead of doing what normal business owners do (negotiate, have polite discussions with the PGA or do something else with the space and acquire goodwill), he threw a Trumpertantrum. The Washington Post reports:
“Can you believe it?” Trump asked the crowd at a rally here Wednesday evening. “Think of it: They moved the PGA Tour — moved the World Golf Championship — from Miami, where they’re furious, to Mexico City. Not good.”
Furious about what? The sponsor backing out? The PGA explained here: Cadillac was the tournament sponsor and they decided not to continue sponsoring the tournament in 2016. After a year of looking for another sponsor, the PGA found one in Mexico. The term World Golf Championship is a clue that this is not just a national event. World includes Mexico and this is a seven-year agreement between the PGA and Grupo Salinas. But as always, facts are not important. It is all about the Trumpertantrum.
He continued: “But that’s okay. Folks, it’s all going to be settled, you vote for Donald Trump as president. If I become your president, this stuff is all going to stop.”
What stuff will stop? Will he try and restrict trade? Because that worked sooooo well in 1929. This reaction to a tour date for golf being moved is not a good sign for a man some of you trust to hold the keys to our nukes. He is a tiny handed thin skinned fool. As Twitterers said:
@DrJenGunter Is Trump gonna do an executive order that all golf tournaments must be held at his properties? What a tiny-handed fool.

@pzpower @froggyradio Title sponsor (Cadillac) didn’t want to renew at $9.5M/yr. not much PGA Tour could do.

In this case, the sponsor drives the location. Cadillac backed out and now Grupo Salinas is the new sponsor and they wanted to have their tournament in Mexico City. If you wanted to keep the tournament at your facility Donnie, you could have gone through your yuuuuuggeee rolodex and found a sponsor, right? Isn’t that what the Art of the Deal is all about? And the market can decide whether this is a very bad idea or a good one. Because that is what free market means: we can decide how we want to spend our time and money. It does not mean throw a Trumpertantrum when you don’t get your way and change the law to benefit you financially. That was tried by every third world dictator and it is a Very Bad Idea.
To the PGA, Buena Suerte and to Donnie, Hasta La Vista. Still #NeverTrump
In this case, the sponsor drives the location.
Yes, but you have to admit some suspicion that it might be political – at least a knee jerk reaction – during this particular election season. Right?
Gawd I hate to prefix what I say every friggin’ time, BUT – I’m no Trumpster, but Cadillac has lost my business forever.
(‘Course GM taking the bailout money had already sealed that deal).
No thoughts about the economic loss to the area. The caterers, the tent people, the garbage people, the cab drivers, the hotels, the restaurants. This is obviously political and meant to hurt Trump. Victory Girls – it is time to move on. Let’s make sure Trump wins over Hill in November.
