Trump Tells Advisers U.S. Is Losing in Afghanistan

NBC News reported last night that President Donald Trump is frustrated with the advice he is getting regarding Afghanistan. The two hour meeting took place on July 19 in the Situation Room. The fact that information took two weeks to leak is a miracle.

The report of his tense meeting with his advisers comes the day after two soldiers were killed in an attack on a convoy outside of Kandahar City, as reported by Time.com. Time.com reported:

The Pentagon’s decision to release the figures seemed to contradict orders issued two months ago by Army Gen. John Nicholson, the top U.S. commander in Afghanistan, barring information about U.S. combat deaths until days after the incident.
There was no information on the number of troops wounded.
U.S. military officials in Afghanistan refused to give any information about casualties, even after the Pentagon released the casualty figures.

Interestingly, in his meeting with the Generals and advisers in The Situation Room last month Trump wanted General Nicholson replaced.

General John Nicholson, U.S. Commander Armed Forces Afghanistan

From NBC News:

During the July 19 meeting, Trump repeatedly suggested that Defense Secretary James Mattis and Chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff Gen. Joseph Dunford replace Gen. John Nicholson, the commander of U.S. forces in Afghanistan, because he is not winning the war, the officials said. Trump has not met Nicholson, and the Pentagon has been considering extending his time in Afghanistan.

On the very thinnest of evidence NBC News reported that General Mattis, Secretary of Defense was upset by the Trump meeting:

Two Pentagon officials close to Mattis said he returned from the White House that morning visibly upset. Mattis often takes a walk when grappling with an issue. That afternoon, the walk took longer than usual, the officials said.

Oh my gravy, a longer walk than usual. He must have been really upset or maybe he really needed to think about the right strategy.

Our friends at Al Jazeera had advice:

Additional troops on the ground, negotiating with the terrorists (either the government or the Taliban) and dealing with an uneducated and fearful populace (however, kind they may be) are not great options.

Now, as to Trump comparing the advice he was get on Afghanistan to The 21 Club getting bad advice from a pricey consultant, I get it. I know…I know, but I get it. Trump wasn’t actually talking about The 21 Club. President Trump was talking about getting useless advice from pricey consultants (aka Generals and advisers). After being closed for a year, the pricey consultant told them they needed a bigger kitchen. No, they needed to get back to what they did well.

If you go to The 21 Club, forget the Steak Tartare, get the Chicken Hash on Toast. I am telling you that it is the best the I ever ate. The 21 Club is my favorite restaurant in the whole world, so I am biased. I also am the Mother of a Soldier, so I have a dog in this fight.

As for Afghanistan, we need to let the military do what they do well. The U.S. military is not the Peace Corps. The U.S. military is a mighty killing force. If you don’t want anyone “deaded”, then don’t use the military.

Maybe Trump needs to fire a General or two, that wouldn’t make him like former President Barack Obama. Maybe Trump needs to fire the political types who are always covering their own buttocks. As for Nicholson, General Mattis defended Nicholson in the following quote from NBC News:

Mattis also defended Gen. Nicholson, an official said, adding that the conversation about the commander ended inconclusively.

Our Country doesn’t need political generals.

Our Country and President Trump both need all of the Generals to be like General Kelly. Speak the truth. Let the pricey consultants and the buttock protectors go. On Afghanistan and many others subjects, we need the unvarnished truth.

    Maybe Trump needs to …
Reconsider the idea of trying to build a western nation where there are no western ideas.

One of Bush’s worst ideas was that as long as they have a constitution and elections, we could build free democracies in Iraq and Afghanistan.
