Trump Signs The One Big Beautiful Bill On Independence Day

The passing of the “One Big Beautiful Bill” is the greatest win that President Trump will likely get from this particular Congress.

However, it delivers on Trump’s biggest campaign promise to make the tax cuts of his first term, which were due to expire, permanent. It also removes taxes on tips and overtime up to a certain amount per person (the White House has a page that was tracking the status of the OBBB, which includes a calculator for people to use to see how much they would save in tax cuts to weekly base pay, weekly tip amount, and weekly overtime premium pay). Now, the “no tax on tips” and “no tax on overtime pay” cuts are currently only slated to last through 2028 (you know, the NEXT election year), but if the Trump tax cuts of the first term could be made permanent, these could eventually be made permanent as well.

Once the House pulled its act together and got the votes to move the bill forward, Democrats had their last stand under Hakeem Jeffries, who droned on and on for over eight hours just because he is in love with the sound of his own voice. (Hilariously, Jeffries was very against the filibuster when he was in the majority – funny, right???)

Once the bill was passed, President Trump took the time to thank the Republican leaders in Congress who got the OBBB through the legistlative process.

He also thanked Majority Leader Steve Scalise and Majority Whip Tom Emmer personally over Truth Social as well.

This is a big moment for President Trump, because it is a signature piece of legislation that he campaigned on, it makes the tax cuts permanent, and it is likely to be the only reconciliation bill that this Congress can get done before the midterms – and who knows what the midterms will look like. But today, the president is enjoying the victory.

He signed the “One Big Beautiful Bill” during the Military Family Picnic at the White House with much pomp and fanfare.

Let’s just say that Democrats are not taking this well.

Lest we gloat too much, let us remember that the Republican majorities in the House and Senate are slim, and people will actually need to see the results from the OBBB before they feel the bill has benefited them. If the GOP loses the House and the Senate, Trump will become a lame duck president with two years to go in his term. Even losing one chamber of Congress will make life a lot harder. I hate to say it, because election seasons are exhausting, but with the OBBB passed and signed, the 2026 midterm election season has officially kicked off.
