Today was the day for Bowe Bergdahl to face up to the consequences of his choices and actions.
Army Sgt. Bowe Bergdahl told a military judge on Monday that he’s pleading guilty to desertion and misbehavior before the enemy.
“I understand that leaving was against the law,” said Bergdahl, whose decision to walk off his remote post in Afghanistan in 2009 prompted intense search and recovery missions, during which some of his comrades were seriously wounded.
“At the time, I had no intention of causing search and recovery operations,” Bergdahl said, but he added that now he does understand that his decision prompted efforts to find him.
The desertion charge carries a five year sentence. However, the misbehavior charge means Bergdahl could receive the maximum sentence of life in prison. The sentencing portion of this trial will be very interesting as military courts allow evidence and testimony to be presented during that time. Which potentially means that the prosecution could present testimony and evidence regarding the search efforts and information regarding the soldiers killed by the Taliban while trying to find his cowardly little butt.
I’m sure the defense will try to claim he was just misunderstood. I’m sure the defense will claim that waltzing off post was just a misguided attempt to let the chain of command know there were problems and that he’s a victim because TRUMP! Marta succinctly explains why he’s definitely NOT a victim here.
Meanwhile, where are all of Bowe Bergdahl’s supporters? Obama all but did a happy dance in the Rose Garden when announcing his release.
