Sorry Charlie: Meek Set To Destroy Greene Tomorrow

Charlie Crist needs Kendrick Meek to lose tomorrow if he wants to have a prayer of making it to the Senate. Unfortunately for Crist, Meek is set to destroy Jeff Greene tomorrow. This is great news for Marco Rubio… and the worst news for Charlie Crist, America’s favorite orange governor. (Funny how easy it is to forget that he is, in fact, still Florida’s governor. He does so little governing.)

Kendrick Meek is headed for a blowout victory in Tuesday’s Florida Democratic Senate primary. He’s now at 51% to 27% for Jeff Greene with the other candidates splitting 9% and 13% still undecided.

… Meek is polling particularly well with liberals, where he has a 64-20 lead. But he’s also up 49-32 with moderate Democrats and 34-30 with conservative ones.

While it appears Meek is headed for an impressive victory on Tuesday night these poll numbers also exemplify the trouble ahead for his candidacy. Meek’s favorability with Democratic voters is 50%. Charlie Crist’s job approval rating with them is 57%. Given that his road in the general election is a very tough one.

How does this spell good news for Marco Rubio? Well, simple. Crist and Meek will battle each other, splitting the Democrat vote. Meanwhile, Republicans and independents will likely flock to Rubio. Crist could have fought with Rubio for the Republican vote, and indeed, it seemed like that was what would happen when Crist first went independent. But Crist moved more and more to the left, and even recently thanked God that he wasn’t a Republican anymore. He’s apparently banking on getting the Democrats to vote for him, and he needs Jeff Greene to win for that to happen.

On top of all of this, Kendrick Meek is a weak candidate. He’s unlikely to be able to actually win the general election. Crist may have been hoping that the DSCC would find him the better candidate and back him. That’s unlikely to happen. The Democrat establishment is unlikely to throw over the actual Democratic candidate for an independent with no loyalty whatsoever. Crist has flip-flopped and changed positions throughout his entire career; he’s been a sleazy politician in every sense of the word. The DSCC is unlikely to have overlooked that. He left the Republican party not out of principle, but because he was going to lose to Marco Rubio. Rather than gracefully accept defeat, he left the GOP. If he’s unsuccessful as a left-leaning independent, why would he stay loyal to Democrats? It would be a complete waste of money for the DSCC.

Unfortunately for Charlie Crist, things just have not worked out the way he wanted to. There’s some speculation that he’s now trying to set himself up for a position in Obama’s cabinet. Maybe that’s the case, and it might be his last chance to stay active in politics. It looks like his Senate campaign is dead, and what is he going to do then? He’s not a trustworthy politician anymore. Everything in Florida seems to be working in Marco Rubio’s favor, and Charlie Crist would have been smart to simply bow out with grace and try to run again in a few years.

Instead, he’s singlehandedly destroyed his political career. Way to go, Charlie. How’s abandoning the GOP working out for you now?

OK, Charlie Crist wanted to be a Senator, a real big shot, most exclusive club, yada yada. When the opening came he took it. Makes sense.

I am sure he was stunned when Marco came out of Miami after being an unknown FL Assembly Speaker to destroy him. Not the year of the sleazy politician.

Would have been a real brouhaha if he had waited til 2012 and set himself up to take on Sen Nelson as the principled, Republican conservative. No other Repub, save Jeb Bush would have any chance of beating Nelson and Repubs nationwide would have flocked to him.

Anyway, 2012 against Nelson, who will the Republican be then??
