Anthony Kennedy sucked all the air out of the news cycle on Wednesday, but there’s another name in the political spotlight. Only this one might not be ready for prime time.
Her name is Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez, and as of late Tuesday night she was the new Democratic It Girl. It’s because she did what seemed impossible: beating Congressman Joe Crowley in a primary. Now this was a Big Deal, since not only is Crowley a 10-term Congressman from New York’s 14th District in Queens, but rumors were flying that he could take Nancy Pelosi’s spot as Democratic House Leader.
Yet the 28-year-old former cocktail waitress, Bernie Bro, and member of the Democratic Socialists of America prevailed. And she ran on these points which should give anyone to the right of Karl Marx some major heartburn. Abolishment of ICE, a jobs guarantee, Medicare for all, free college — what could possibly go wrong?
Ah, but it looks like Alexandria’s star may be flaming out, and on her first day as the nominee, too.

Ocasio-Cortez showed up on CNN on Wednesday morning after her big win and accused ICE of running “black sites” at the border.
Black sites?
Well, yeah, she says. The childhood facilities at the border protect the privacy of the children there, so that means they’re “black sites,” or something.

And that’s all within 24 hours after her victory over Joe Crowley.
Yep, Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez is a dumpster fire. But she’ll win in November, no doubt. The borough in Queens she hopes to represent is deep blue, so there’s little chance of a GOP victory. And it looks like New York’s 14th District just elected themselves a joke.
She’ll be a hoot when she gets to DC. We’ll just sit back and enjoy the show.

She also points out that voter turnout was 28,000 in a district with almost 300,000 registered voters,and is 49.8% Hispanic.
Thus, I am not convinced of how much of a “win” this is, although it will get good press, at least initially.

Tattycoram says: I share your concern about Ms. Ocasio-Cortez’ politics and associates, but you belittle yourself when you belittle her by describing her as a “cocktail waitress” (which she was) without also pointing out that in high school she won a high prize in the international Intel science fair; she attended BU, graduating with a double major in international relations and economics.
She might, in fact, have received a better education and learned more important skills about her constituents as a cocktail waitress.

I think that all decent-minded people should help her get her message out and make it clear that her views are the ascendant, desired positions of the Democratic party. At the same time, the House should introduce a resolution condemning calls for the elimination of ICE, the military and police, and the abolishment of prisons as irresponsible attacks on the rule of law. Let’s see how many Democrats vote for or against. For each Democrat who votes against, we get >10,000 more votes in the R column. And each Democrat who votes in favor will be pursued by a mob of the “woke” like in Night of the Living Dead.

The reason Cortez won is easy to grasp: NY’s 14th Congressional District recently became predominately latino, thanks to the two-decade tidal surge of south of the border migrants into the big blue cities.

Howard Hirsch says: As one Hirsch (this one with Bronx roots, although not in the CD 14 as currently constituted) to another, let me say that I am not surprised by this development. CD 14 is only 18% white these days, so it was only a matter of time before Joe Crowley would be gone. No doubt his neighbor in the next district, Eliot Engel, will find his days numbered soon enough. If he’s politically savvy enough, he’ll call it quits next time around at age 73. He will have been in Congress 32 years, and before that ten in the NY state assembly.
The unpleasant truth for the “legacy” (=white) Democrats of advanced age–Hillary, Pelosi, Jerry Brown, Bernie Sanders, and Dianne Feinstein soon enough, is that their glory days are over. The Democrat party is becoming a radical Third World advocacy organization, going so far as to trash its own history–no more Jefferson-Jackson Day fund-raising dinners (the former only founded the damn thing, after all), replacement of Andrew Jackson on the $20 bill by Harriet Tubman (who, from accounts I’ve read, was a Republican), revisionist history regarding Woodrow Wilson and even the sainted FDR!
Do not think that this is not a winning strategy for them. It may not be now, but it will be later on. Then it will be up to the rest of us to organize “Resistance 2.0”
