Twenty-five-year-old NYPD Officer Brian Moore died Monday morning after fighting for his life following an attack by an ex-con. You may have heard that Officer Moore was shot Saturday evening after confronting, with his partner in their patrol car, a THUG on the street whom the two officers said they saw “adjusting an object in his waistband.” When they asked the man—whom we now know is Demetrius Blackwell—what the object was, he pulled a pistol from his waistband and shot into the cruiser, hitting Moore in the cheek, but missing his partner. He was rushed to Jamaica Hospital where surgery was performed, and then placed in a medically induced coma. More, from the Daily News on this morning’s tragic news:

Police Commissioner Bill Bratton arrived at the hospital after word of Moore’s death leaked out.

Earlier, a distraught woman and two grim-faced officers bearing a dress uniform and a pair of polished shoes were seen at the hospital.

Moore’s death means that Demetrius Blackwell will likely face a murder charge for gunning down the plainclothes police officer in Queens Village, the sources said.

Blackwell, a 35-year-old self-described “hell-raiser” [is] a cousin of former Giants cornerback Kory Blackwell…

Not surprisingly, Blackwell has an extensive rap sheet that includes assault on officers, and prison time for attempted murder. May he never again taste the fruits of Freedom.

Where is the outrage? Where are Officer Moore’s fellow Americans protesting in the streets with signs that read “EVERY Life Matters?” No, they’ll be none of that. Sure, they’ll be legions of his fellow men and women in blue, and supportive citizens, chaperoning Officer Moore to his final resting place. As there should be. But perhaps what is most disturbing is the silence from those who are supposed to be, not partisan ideologues, but America’s leaders. Where are they? In case you haven’t noticed, that part of America is on life support. And for that, I also mourn.
