For even the most keyed in voters, untangling the connections of the Clinton family dynasty is complicated. We learned this week that the Clinton Foundation is in fact being invested by the FBI aided by the US Attorney’s office in the Southern District of New York. This investigation was addressed by FBI Director James Comey’s hearing last month with the House Committee on Oversight and Government Reform headed by Jason Chaffetz. At the time, Comey refused to answer Chaffetz’ question about whether an investigation was being conducted.

The allegations (of which everyone who has a brain knows are likely true) are that special favors were performed for those who donated large sums of money to the Clinton conglomerate. Special favors consisted of wielding the State Department powers in a favorable way for whomever the donor may be. The Clinton Foundation has collected more than $2 billion dollars over the last 15 years. Donors have included “Eastern European tycoons, Arab Sheiks, African mining magnates, hedge fund billionaires and Wall Street firms.” For an exhaustive look at the Foundation’s operations click here for the November 2015 Washington Post article detailing the big money donors, many of the shady variety, all of the dripping with millions variety.

Until now, despite probably holding the title of the Most Scandal-Ridden First Couple ever, the Clintons have escaped all repercussions for their actions. They manage to slink away every time, and really inexplicably, maintain a healthy cadre of supporters. This despite breaking all the social justice rules – including putting women in degrading positions and being more than cozy with Wall Street. Until now, maybe.

Now, one of the investigations of the Clinton Foundation is being led by Preet Bharara. Bharara has made a name for himself prosecuting financial fraud. He has achieved convictions against banks, hedge funds, and Wall Street insiders. He has created special financial fraud investigation units that have collected $500 million in settlements from banks for faulty lending practices, among other fraudulent acts.

Bharara is best known for securing convictions of prominent political figures, including former New York State Assembly Speaker Sheldon Silver. Silver had a seemingly intractable grip on power in the state for decades. He was convicted of accepting $4 million in exchange for helping a cancer researcher and two real estate developers.

He also secured the conviction of New York Republican Majority Leader Dean Skelos, who was sentenced to five years in prison for corruption.

Aside from the apparent neutral aggressiveness that Bharara has displayed in his career so far, it is taken as a good sign that the investigation is being conducted outside of the DOJ. The DOJ had declined to investigate, even though it has been reported that three different field offices had recommended that a public corruption investigation should be launched in the activities of the Clinton Foundation. After the hype of being told what a straight shooter James Comey was, and then to see him completely abdicate his responsibility to justice, it will be interesting, if not encouraging to see how Preet Bharara manages this investigation. If he lives up to his reputation, Hillary Clinton may finally have something to worry about, and #NeverHillary supporters may have something to cheer about. He actually puts people in jail.
