As if the extensive media hype this weekend over LeBron James returning to play for the Cleveland Cavaliers isn’t ridiculous enough, we now have to deal with the possibility that the northern Ohio love-fest-reunion could have an impact on the future of our country. That is because on Tuesday of this past week the Republican National Committee chose Cleveland as the host city for its 2016 Republican National Convention.
Normally, the RNC and the NBA would have little in common. However, speculation is already rampant that with the return of LeBron to the shores of the Great Lakes, the northern Ohio bridge-city will again find itself immersed in NBA playoffs well into the month of June of 2016. After all, the Miami Heat—for whom LeBron played for the last few years—has been in the playoffs consistently while LeBron wore their jersey. So, many fans and sports analysts feel certain that Cleveland will be headed back to the top—and to the playoffs—with LeBron back in their ranks.
And if that happens in 2016, then a number of games of the playoffs would be held in Cleveland, at the very site where the RNC would be convening, during the very weeks that it would take to set up for the RNC. And heaven knows that the NBA playoffs would take precedence over the nomination of the next president of the United States.
The GOP normally holds its convention in late July or early August. However, for 2016 the RNC is planning to hold its convention and nominate its presidential candidate nearly two months earlier than normal in order to make funds available to the nominee much earlier than normal. The reason for the deviation from the usual routine is that a party’s candidate for president cannot be given funds by the party’s national committee until the candidate’s nomination is official. And with the way the mudslinging on both sides of the aisle has gone in Presidential elections in recent years, why not start earlier than ever and torture Americans through the summer as well as the fall?
At present LeBron has signed on for two years with Cleveland. That takes him through the 2014-15 and 2015-16 NBA seasons. That latter season is the one that would conflict with the RNC if Cleveland makes it through the playoffs to the semifinals and, ultimately, the finals. Indeed, the leaders of the GOP are already looking at alternative dates, most likely July of 2016, in the event Cleveland and LeBron do make it to the June schedule of the NBA playoffs in 2016. That would cut off a month of funding and would mean that commercials and other campaigning would be a month later than planned. And that could affect the outcome of the Presidential election since the time for disseminating the message of the GOP would be truncated.
A point that Republicans should focus on is that James could opt out of the 2015-16 season:
LeBron James signed a two-year, $42 million contract with the Cleveland Cavaliers that has an opt-out clause in the second season, allowing him to potentially again become a free agent next summer…
Maybe the RNC should try to get Mark Cuban to recruit LeBron to play for the Mavericks next year. Or perhaps the LA Clippers could entice him to go West. Better yet, the RNC could convince the DNC to chuck the six cities that submitted bids to host the DNC in 2016 and hold their national convention in San Antonio in June of 2016. San Antonio has been in the last two NBA finals, winning the championship over LeBron’s Miami Heat this year. Besides that, the Democrats are bringing in thousands of potential new voters across the southern border. Why not welcome them with a massive party in 2016?
