What in Cornbread Heck happened to Thomas Massie? The Kentucky Congressman has been aggressively hostile to Republicans and MAGA. In the past he seemed a workmanlike, reasonable Libertarian. Trump has even started a PAC to oust him from Congress. It’s almost like he’s lost his balance.
Until the last year, I cannot remember hearing anything about Massie even though he has been in the U.S. Congress since 2012. The most important thing that I read about him was that he was the second least Congressman to vote with Joe Biden, behind Chip Roy. He does seem to have a burr in his backside about Trump. This past January he was a holdout on Mike Johnson, who is no one’s idea of a forceful speaker, and our Carol wrote it up.
Massie sat down with Margaret Brennan to grouse on why he didn’t think President Trump had the Constitutional Authority to bomb Iran. He’s wrong all the way through. Iran has been a direct threat to Americans for 46 years.
Take note of the difference in Massie’s appearance. He’s completely wrong on Trump.
Then yesterday, he was on All In with Chris Hayes. From The Hill:
Rep. Thomas Massie (R-Ky.) said Monday that he isn’t bothered by President Trump’s latest push for his ouster after the lawmaker criticized the U.S. strikes against Iran, claiming he’s grown immune to the president’s attacks.
“In some sense, I have the Trump antibodies,” Massie said in an interview with MSNBC’s “All In with Chris Hayes.”
He added, “There are a few people here who are consistent and don’t sway in the wind when it’s your president or somebody else’s president, and I’m just trying to be consistent here in this case.”
A Libertarian bragging that he has “Trump anti-bodies” makes no sense. And, he’s swinging above his weight class with Trump. Here’s more:
In their latest skirmish, Trump urged his Make America Great Again (MAGA) movement to ostracize the Kentucky Republican after he blasted the president for sidestepping Congress to order airstrikes on Iran’s nuclear facilities Saturday. Massie called the move unconstitutional.
“MAGA should drop this pathetic LOSER, Tom Massie, like the plague!” the president wrote Sunday in a post on Truth Social. “The good news is that we will have a wonderful American Patriot running against him in the Republican Primary, and I’ll be out in Kentucky campaigning really hard.”
“MAGA is not about lazy, grandstanding, nonproductive politicians, of which Thomas Massie is definitely one,” he added.
Trump and Massie have been feuding over the president’s agenda-setting One Big Beautiful Bill Act, which the Bluegrass State lawmaker voted against when it narrowly passed the House last month.
Massie accepted Trump’s endorsement in 2022. Now, the Kentucky Congressman works hard to be a boil on Trump’s nose:
So what he did wasn’t unconstitutional… thank you for clearing that up for your followers that claimed otherwise, after you implied it over the weekend.

I am going to posit a theory here that I think really works. I think Thomas Massie is grieving for his wife. Rhonda Massie died almost exactly one year ago. From the AP:
Rhonda Massie, the wife of U.S. Rep. Thomas Massie, has died, the Kentucky congressman announced Friday in a moving social media tribute to his high school sweetheart and the “love of my life.”
No details about the cause of death or her age were immediately provided by Massie or his staff.
“Yesterday my high school sweetheart, the love of my life for over 35 years, the loving mother of our 4 children, the smartest kindest woman I ever knew, my beautiful and wise queen forever, Rhonda went to Heaven,” Massie wrote on the social platform X.
His social media posts featured photos showing the couple and their family. The congressman said the couple spent time with their grandson last week while touring Mount Rainier in Washington.
Massie wrote about his wife’s academic achievements and devotion to her family.
“She was valedictorian at our high school where we went to the Prom together, accepted at MIT and Harvard, earned a Mechanical Engineering degree from MIT, and devoted her life to our family,” he wrote.
The Massie’s had been together since high school. They were likely each other’s sounding boards and balance. It makes for a wonderful relationship. I am sure he misses her desperately. That may help explain the change in his appearance.
People keep asking me what’s happened to Thomas Massie???
Truth is, I don’t have a clue???
He’s always kinda walked his own path, to say, he’s NEVER really voted with Trump, but I’ve always liked the guy…♂️
I even campaigned for him some during his reelection, but the… pic.twitter.com/AKw98ETU7O

He is grieving and I am sorry for his loss. On the other hand, our government is not the place to work out your personal issues. He should grieve in private. He is not working for his constituents.
I think that he lost his balance when he lost his wife.

The Bluegrass State has produced two of the libertarians — not Libertarians! — in Congress, Senator Rand Paul (R-KY) and Representative Massie. Messrs Rand and Massie have been solidly consistent in their positions, regardless of who was President at the time.
I don’t live in Mr Massie’s district, but if I did, I’d vote for him.
Massie seems to be bidding for attention above all. For a Republican in Congress who has aspirations to higher office, just now the best guaranteed route to public attention is to oppose President Trump. Other explanations seem weaker than that one.
