Greenland Enjoys Being Courted, Eyeing Trump

Greenland is not thought of as attractive real estate, but with Donald Trump flirting, the country is feeling the love. The Arctic Circle country has been in a cooling relationship with Denmark for a long time. President Donald Trump and the United States could provide a far more interesting and rewarding relationship for the icy country.

The Chattering Classes have gone from Venezuela fear to Greenland fear without bothering to take a breath. Or, think either. They rarely think or breathe anyway. They have been writing posts about President Trump taking the country away from Denmark by force all week. Apparently, Navy Seals, Green Berets, Night Stalkers, the 82nd Airborne and the Iowa League of Women Voters are all prepared for this kinetic action. Just a month ago, we had T.A.C.O. or Trump Always Chickens Out.

I think the United States is hella more fun than Denmark.

Denmark has been colonizing Greenland since 1721 but has not done a bang up job of supporting the country. Benign neglect kind of relationship. Here is what Rich Lowry wrote in the New York Post:

Denmark controls Greenland as a semi-autonomous territory. It colonized the sparsely populated island several hundred years ago.

Mostly within the Arctic Circle, Greenland is not desirable real estate by any typical metric, but it has outsized strategic significance.

As more waters become navigable in the Arctic Sea, the top of the world opens up for greater geopolitical contention.

Greenland occupies a crucial spot: It sits on a key naval corridor between the Atlantic and the Arctic, and it has prodigious reserves of critical minerals, and perhaps fossil fuels, too.

If it fell into our lap, it’d be an excellent addition to our territorial holdings.

There’s a reason that American statesmen down through the decades have coveted the island.

The problem is that it’s not currently available.

There is “not currently available” and there is “NOT CURRENTLY AVAILABLE“. Actually, Greenland is a soft “maybe”. Benign neglect doesn’t feel so benign after a while.

Navigable waters are small beans. Does Rich Lowry know about guided missiles. Does he know aggressive Russia and China have been? He has to think bigger.

Nearly a full year ago, our Carol wrote “Buying Greenland, The Game of Trump”. Secretary of State Marco Rubio looked attractive then and more so now:

Officials in Denmark and Greenland are requesting a meeting with Secretary of State Marco Rubio after President Trump renewed his focus on acquiring the Arctic island, days after ousting Venezuelan leader Nicolás Maduro.

The White House on Tuesday reiterated Trump’s call for the U.S. to take over the Danish territory for national security reasons and has acknowledged that a range of options — including the use of military force — remain on the table.

The request for a summit with Rubio came from Danish Foreign Minister Lars Løkke Rasmussen and his Greenlandic counterpart, Vivian Motzfeldt, according to a statement translated by The Associated Press. Previous requests were turned down, the officials said.

Danish Prime Minister Mette Frederiksen has responded sharply to the suggestion that the U.S. could take over the island, warning that any attempt to strip Denmark of sovereignty over Greenland could undermine the NATO alliance.

“I believe one should take the American president seriously when he says that he wants Greenland,” Frederiksen said earlier this week in an interview with Danish broadcaster TV2.

Take Trump very seriously. Except the military takeover of Greenland. Not happening. The Daily Caller wrote:

CNN anchor Jake Tapper pressed White House Deputy Chief of Staff for Policy Stephen Miller on Monday with a question designed to force a headline.

President Donald Trump again floated U.S. control of Greenland on Sunday, telling reporters aboard Air Force One that national-security concerns require American oversight because Denmark cannot adequately secure the strategically located, resource-rich island. Appearing on “The Lead,” Tapper repeatedly asked Miller to answer whether the administration would categorically exclude the use of military force in any future effort to bring Greenland under U.S. control.

“Can you rule out that the U.S. is ever going to try to take Greenland by force?” Tapper asked Miller.

“Let me go back a step. The president has been clear for months now,” Miller said.

“So I know you’re treating this as breaking news. The president has been clear for months now that the United States should be the nation that has Greenland as part of our overall security apparatus.”

A U.S./Denmark war would make a great 80’s teen comedy movie.

Right now, Greenland is looking for a new man in a 90’s relationship movie. Will Netflix get the rights for the multi-season series?

Denmark provides about $600 Million in aid to Greenland per year. That’s about .67% of the amount which Minnesota’s Walz Administration provided as fraudulent payments to Somalis.

Even with aid for honestly deserved items, Greenlanders are much better off making a deal with President Trump.
