The WNBA just keeps digging new holes for themselves. This time, future WNBA star Enes Kanter Freedom was removed from a game after Chicago Sky player Natasha Cloud started screaming at him.

For those who have been following this saga, you knew that this was inevitable. Former NBA players Enes Kanter Freedom and Royce White decided to declare that they were women now, and announced that they were entering the WNBA draft. The league complained about “bad-faith actors,” but then kicked the can down the road because they can’t actually SAY that a woman is a biological female adult. If they state the truth, a majority of the players, coaches, and owners will freak out – not to mention the fan base. If they don’t say it, then what is their rationale for keeping Enes Kanter Freedom and Royce White out of the draft? We’ve already established that the collective barganing agreement states that “only women can play in the WNBA,” but fails to provide a definition. Any lawyer worth their degree is going to be able to make the WNBA look stupid in court if they deny Freedom and White the chance to enter the draft.

And because the WNBA leadership is made up out of cowards, this will probably end in court.

Meanwhile, the attention-getting protests will continue until the WNBA knows what a woman is. In support of Sophie Cunningham, pro-women’s sports protests are popping up wherever she plays. Last night, the Indiana Fever was playing in Chicago, and Enes Kanter Freedom joined the pre-game rally for women.

And yes, there were people there who wanted to pick a fight with Freedom. But that doesn’t match what happened next. During the game, one of the players for the Chicago Sky, Natasha Cloud, started yelling from midcourt at Enes Kanter Freedom, and approached him. And then security removed him.

It’s not entirely clear what set off the situation, but during the third quarter, after Cloud made a layup, she started to say something toward the baseline where Freedom was sitting.

Cloud’s Sky teammates and team personnel had to hold her back and Freedom was seen on the broadcast getting up out of his seat and walking toward Cloud with a smirk on his face and arms outstretched.

Arena security quickly got involved and moved Freedom from his seat and to a spot behind the basket, where it seemed he was informed he had to leave.

Cloud met with team and league security after the game. She did not speak with the media, the AP reported.

Freedom, who has declared himself eligible for the WNBA draft, saying that he identifies as a woman, was booed by the crowd as he was removed from the arena and appeared to try to argue with security before holding up his shirt that read: “WOMAN noun. adult human female.”

Video in the lobby of the arena showed Freedom arguing with uniformed officers from the Chicago Police Department, and he could be heard claiming, “I’m supporting women, and that is the reason they are kicking me out; it is unacceptable.”

Freedom then walked out the front entrance with several other people, including one man in a blue shirt and jeans who was filming with his phone and could be seen in other videos from Sunday filming the ex-NBA player as he walked into the arena.

The WNBA has been having issues with players complaining about fans lately. DiJonai Carrington – who people more popularly know right now as the player who clotheslined Sophie Cunningham across the face – had a fan removed from the game on August 12th, but he was let back in when her complaint was determined to be “unfounded.” A Las Vegas player did the same less than a week before that, and security determined that nothing had happened. It seems we have diva princesses on the court. Natasha Cloud looks like she’s just another player who can’t deal with another “woman” who has a different opinion than her.

According to The Athletic, Cloud started this all on her own.

Tricia Smith, a fan who said she sat next to Freedom, said Cloud instigated the confrontation on Sunday night.

“Natasha Cloud scored. She came over and threw her hands up and was talking s— to his face,” said Smith, a Boise, Idaho, native, who said she didn’t know Freedom before the game. “So he stood up and said, like, ‘What? What do you want?’ He didn’t do a thing. I’ve sat next to him the whole game. He’s a great guy. He’s taken probably 50 pictures tonight.”

The confrontation that Cloud initiated with Freedom was quite eye-opening, because those physical differences between men and women are no joke.

Holy smokes.

Can you imagine if he played against them?

He would crush them… this entire display made the WNBA look like a joke no matter which way you slice it.

Natasha Cloud is 5’10”, according to the WNBA profile page. Enes Kanter Freedom is a full foot taller than she is. But none of this would matter if the WNBA would just define what a woman is. And yet, some commentators will blame Enes Kanter Freedom for even being there in the first place. Dave Portnoy agrees in principle that men should not be in women’s sports, but calls him a “clown” for “making this all about him.” That’s missing the point.

The WNBA is basically telling Sophie Cunningham to shut up and dribble.

Bingo. This all ends when the WNBA decides it does – by defining what a woman is for WNBA eligibility purposes (and getting the players’ union to agree to it in their collective bargaining agreement), AND by telling their players to ignore fans unless there are actual threats involved. No more of this “oh that fan said something I didn’t like” or “I see that t-shirt and I hate it, take him away” crap. What does the WNBA think will happen when fans stop showing up, because the players have whined and complained and gotten more of them kicked out? The WNBA needs revenue, and having players continually single out ticket-paying fans to have removed is going to mean that eventually, fans will stop coming. And I hate to break it to the players, but if you don’t have fans in the arena, you don’t get paid.

Is what Enes Kanter Freedom doing a “stunt?” YES. And that IS the point. But because the WNBA is scared shitless to take an actual stand, the “stunt” is proving just how cowardly they actually are. Too bad they can’t find some balls.
