Friday Fiction: 100 Word Challenge

A quote: “Opportunity is missed by most people because it is dressed in overalls and looks like work.” ~~ Thomas A. Edison

I’ll start with a story …

She took a stool at the end of the bar, looking at her phone as he approached. “Vodka martini, lemon twist.”

“Not a cosmo, sugar rim?”

She looked up, eyes flashing and then resolving into recognition. “Hi, Steve.”

Memory staggered him. Two ambitious youths with dreams too big to remain together. He turned to fixing her drink to regain his composure.

She accepted it, meeting his eyes. “Ever get that recording contract?”

He shook his head, “Did you hit it big in the fashion biz?”

“No.” She touched his arm, slipped off the stool and walked out.

He didn’t follow.

Now, it’s your turn.

The dress fit as if it had been poured onto her. The makeup accentuated her face perfectly and she leaned against the bar in a way that had everyone’s attention.

I walked right up next to her, ordered my wine and drank in the sight of her unapologetically. She gave me a coquettish smile. “You believe me now?” she asked.

I smiled at my girlfriend. “Yes, you can look feminine if you choose. It really is a good look on you.” I moved closer once the bartender gave me my wine and whispered, “But I’ve always seen you that way.”

  • It was just a look. A glance. It told me all I needed to know. She was done. After 32 years of marriage, three kids (now grown), as many ups and downs as any marriage cycles through, she had finally had enough. We had never cheated on each other, of that I am sure. My credentials going into the marriage had finally run its course. Then, something magical happened. My oldest daughter asked her why she had not divorced me yet. She simply said,
“I don’t believe in divorce”. So, we have stayed the course. I married well.
