Facebook to add Dislike button

Facebook may be adding a new “Dislike” button. Secretly I’ve been wishing for this for years. However, upon learning more specifics, I have a few thoughts:

FBDislike

1. I can’t see this being abused at all.

2. Mark Zuckerberg says it will reduce work load for Facebook since they won’t have to police Facebook. I guess he didn’t think how much more work he’s making when he’s going to have police the complaints from people whose posts got sent down the memory hole.

3. Zuckerberg says this will make Facebook a very happy place where users will be at less risk of being subjected to psychologically harmful material. If you are psychologically harmed by looking at Facebook, you have bigger problems than needing a dislike button to return your state of mind to your own personal utopia.

4.  This is an amazing opportunity for the PC Police to increase ranks a billion-fold, and continue to grow our victim-culture.

5. I like that Zuckerberg thinks this will streamline the removal of objectionable material. I wonder what he is going to think when his Dislike button gets disliked so many times that it disappears from view, just as if it never existed. Just as if he never existed. Oh no, Throwback to his college days of being the outsider. But he’ll probably be like Congress and the Dislike button won’t appear on any of his posts.

6. Using the Dislike button will become like a personal affront, and we will have to resort to dueling to settle these scores. Well, at least it will get the kids outside more.

7. To remove the potential for fisticuffs he will have to make the Dislike anonymous. Because being anonymous on the internet really keeps the civility in check.

As I said, I have long yearned for a way to show disapproval with one quick click, but then I discovered “Unfollow” and that has made my relationship with my Facebook friends much more pleasurable. Of course, it means that I never see what some of those “Friends” have to say, and thereby completely undermines the sentiment of being Friends, but believe me it’s better for both of us. I suspect many of my “Friends” have done the same to me since simple recognition of even my most playful and fun loving posts is next to zero. Except for mom, she Likes everything.

So take that Mark Zuckerberg! Despite your sly attempts at social engineering and cultural shifts towards all things PC, I am way ahead of you in creating my own special place. It’s a little bit lonely, and frequently devoid of any human interaction, but my mental health is doing just fine.
