Donald Trump’s Comeback: The Challenge For Mainstream Media

Donald Trump takes office tomorrow—hip, hip, hooray! We’ve seen this next part coming for a while now: how will the mainstream media handle the pivot—or will they even try? They seem desperate to shake off their reputation as relentless nags, but the damage is done. It’s too late to rewrite the narrative now.

For those of us who’ve been tuned into alternative media for years, the mainstream media’s constant spin has become almost laughable. We’ve turned to these independent outlets because we crave a more honest, straightforward approach—something the mainstream just can’t seem to deliver without twisting the facts. Watching them contort themselves only reinforces why we look elsewhere for the truth. It’s a constant reminder of the stark difference between genuine reporting and the made-up stories they push.

And now the Sandman cometh.

The last few years should have been a wake-up call for the mainstream media. Independent citizen journalists, podcasts, and bloggers are gaining more influence, taking the spotlight away from the legacy media. The narrative control they’ve held for so long is slipping, and their free ride looks like it is ending.

Some political observers saw Trump’s November victory, which came as he either ditched or attacked top news outlets in favor of social media and internet platforms, as an indictment on the mainstream press’s credibility and influence on American voters.

“It’s pretty clear the biggest loser of the 2024 election was the mainstream media,” one national political reporter told The Hill this week. “A lot of these outlets are completely lost, and the vibe is basically one of fear and insecurity as Trump takes over again.” – The Hill

When did Donald Trump use NBC, ABC, CBS, CNN, or Fox News to spread his campaign message? He was all over his own Truth Social. The now antiquated media scrambled to be the first to air his Truth Social posts, while he created his own campaign messages that X picked up.

America, which was in tune with all this, didn’t get information from corporate news.

In the last part of 2024, Elon Musk constantly told us, “You are the media now.” Here are a few examples:

Unfiltered Truth

The number of podcasts Trump appeared on to directly speak to the people was a brilliant move. People aren’t just sitting at home in their recliners at 6:00 p.m. waiting for a news anchor to give a rundown of the day’s events anymore. Instead, they’re tuning into the voices and platforms that give them the unfiltered truth—straight from the source. But I feel like I am beating a dead horse here.

The point is, we’ll always have legacy media, but how will they evolve moving forward? Some outlets have changed leadership, while others claim they’ve reevaluated their mission and promised a more moderate tone. Sure, let’s see how long that lasts.

And then there are the journalists themselves, leaving the mainstream liberal news circuit to cash in on their own independent reporting—taking a cue from the already successful right-leaning independents.

Take Jennifer Rubin, for example. She’s leaving the Post to start something hilariously called The Contrarian with Norm Eisen on Substack. Because, obviously, what the world really needs right now is another tired, self-proclaimed “contrarian” voice to add to the endless echo chamber.

Well, I suppose I should congratulate them for finally catching up with the rest of us. They even bragged about hitting 125,000 subscribers on launch day—could that be the same number of people who voted for Kamala Harris?

The Next Four Years

The next four years of media reporting on Trump are going to be a real showstopper. Imagine Karoline Leavitt shaking things up by letting a more interesting group of people into the White House briefings—bloggers and podcasters, anyone?

Can you imagine Joe Rogan and Tim Pool sitting in the front row with Peter Doocy, hands raised, ready to fire off the tough questions? “What’s the real story here?” I’m all for that!

Once TikTok is back up and running, maybe we’ll see an influencer in the audience ready to ask the Press Secretary for an update on Greenland’s status.

Throw in some independent bloggers for good measure. Picture any of The Victory Girls waltzing in with press passes, giving the status quo a serious shake-up. Yeah, I get it—total pipe dream. But hey, a girl can dream, right?

The show begins in less than 24 hours.

Having given up main stream news is the 1970’s I must say it’s not much different for me now! I get my news elsewhere! Like here! and others which are also “like here”. It’s a new world of podcasts, special reports, tv, internet, radio, and as always, voice to voice communication! As I approach my 8th decade I am so excited about what’s going on everywhere, I will try my best to get my 9th decade to stay in touch! Thanks, Carol, thanks Victory Girls!
