With the city of Baltimore still on edge after the riots spurred by Freddie Gray’s death while in police custody the Fraternal Order of Police, aka the police union, published an open letter asking the State’s Attorney Marilyn Mosby to recuse herself from the case and request a special prosecutor.
Why would they do that? It seems that Ms. Mosby has a number of potential conflicts of interest in this case as outlined in the letter from Gene Ryan the President of the Fraternal Order of Police in Baltimore.
“These conflicts include your personal and professional relationship with the Gray family attorney, William Murphy, and the lead prosecutor’s connections with the local media,” Ryan said.
“Most importantly, it is clear that your husband’s political figure (sic) will be directly impacted, for better or for worse, by the outcome of this investigation,” Ryan said.
It seems that Ms. Mosby is married to Nick Mosby who is on the city council and has been in the media critizing the coverage of the Baltimore riots in the media for the past week. Then there is the relationship she has with the attorney for the Gray family William Murphy. It seems that Mr. Murphy was the top contributor to her campaign, donating some $4,000 just last year.
These are important concerns and deserve to be answered, though it seems they will not be since Ms. Mosby has refused to request a special prosecutor.
The unrest continued even after the lengthly list of charges against the six officers filed by Ms. Mosby were revealed in a Friday press conference. Civil disobedience continued throughout the city as people “walked in the streets in celebration”. According to Yahoo News:
“Many paraded through riot-scarred neighborhoods and chanted Freddie Gray’s name as security forces nervously looked on.
“Baltimore people, we did it!” shouted 18-year-old John Johnson. “Justice needs to be served!”
Cars streamed down West North Avenue in a cacophony of horns, as a man wearing a t-shirt that read “I Bleed Baltimore” thrust his fists into the air and cheered.”
According to the Police Commissioner Anthony Batts the curfew of 10 p.m. imposed after the riots broke out earlier this week will stay in effect until Sunday, May 3rd. Commissioner Batts also mentioned that police knew of two planned marches over the weekend but were needing to prepare for spontaneous uprisings as well.
“Protesters were planning large demonstrations in Baltimore and around the country Friday, which is May Day, a date traditionally used to champion labor issues but which has expanded over the years to include such causes as women’s and immigrant rights. This year, many planned to add civil rights and the slogan “black and brown lives matter.”
The Baltimore Sun reports that Washington-based attorney Malik Shabazz is organizing a national rally at Baltimore’s City Hall on Saturday at 2 p.m. Another rally will be held Sunday at 3 p.m.”
Now on that last paragraph, many of you know that Malik Shabazz is not just any attorney from DC-he is in fact the former chairman of the New Black Panther Party. You remember them? They were the same paramilitary organization that sent thugs to the polls in 2008 to ensure that blacks could vote.
Welcome to the 1960’s folks only without the great fashion and catchy soundtrack. This is “post-racial” America.
