I don’t always agree with Amy Schumer (especially when she’s going off on anti-gun rants) but when I do, it is for a good reason. When mags like Cosmo and Glamour are not photoshopping the heck out of their 6-foot-7 Brazilian supermodels with legs up to their collarbones (who are already a size zero) and telling women that they, too can eat nothing but salad and look this way in a three thousand dollar dress, they are attempting to connect with their “plus-size” audience. You know, “average” girls.
Schumer, who was unaware that she was being included in this issue, had a few things to say to Glamour Magazine and responded with this Instagram post:
“Thanks for your thoughts to the people who didn’t tell me how I “should feel” Bottom line seems to be that these labels are unnecessary and reserved for women #muchlove”
“I think there’s nothing wrong with being plus size. Beautiful healthy women. Plus size is considered size 16 in America. I go between a size 6 and an 8. @glamourmag put me in their plus size only issue without asking or letting me know and it doesn’t feel right to me. Young girls seeing my body type thinking that is plus size? What are your thoughts? Mine are not cool glamour not glamourous.”
What does Glamour consider “Plus Size”? Sizes 12 and up. The issue, whose sole sponsor is plus-sized retail chain, Lane Bryant is on newsstands now for a plus-sized price of $12.99. If the price does not deter you from buying the issue, ladies…this will…it includes an interview with Lena Dunham!
Glamour magazine responded to Schumer with this statement:
“First off, we love Amy, and our readers do too — which is why we featured her on the cover of Glamour last year. The cover line on this special
edition — which is aimed at women size 12 and up — simply says ‘Women Who Inspire Us,’ since we believe her passionate and vocal message of body positivity IS inspiring, as is the message of the many other women, of all sizes, featured. The edition did not describe her as plus-size. We are sorry if we offended her in any way.”
Backpedal much? This has not been the first time Schumer has been called-out on the carpet for being something other than the superficial standard of Hollywood “beauty”. Back in February 2015, Jeffrey Wells categorized her as one of the “chubby-cheeked, whipsmart, not conventionally attractive, neurotically bothered female comic who in no way would be an object of heated romantic interest in the real world.”
Wowza. In Hollywood-speak, that would drive any insecure woman actress to head on down to the corner plastic surgeon for an ol’ nip-tuck. Or perhaps become addicted to pills to lose some of the excess bulge. Others have embraced their curves and argued that the “plus-sized” label should be a thing of the past to include Meagan Trainor and former supermodel, Tyra Banks:
“I don’t like the label ‘plus-size’ – I call it ‘fiercely real.’ I don’t want to use the term ‘plus-size,’ because, to me, what the hell is that? It just doesn’t have a positive connotation to it. I tend to not use it.”-Tyra Banks
In an era where bullying and shaming is so discouraged, we have a magazine (inadvertently but doing so nonetheless) calling a woman who falls between a size 6 and a size 8 “plus size”. Basically anyone who is between an 6 and a 10 and up and who has a bit more meat on their bones is “plus size”. Bodybuilders are “plus size”. Women over 30 who have had children and can no longer fit in their size two jeans because of a past C-section are now “plus size”. Glamour‘s mission in this “plus-sized” endeavor is supposedly to “empower” women and focus on “realness”…blah, blah, blah. Let’s call it what it is. A huge advertisement for Lane Bryant and a smack down at the same time in the land of superficial fashion and celebrity. Up next month? Glamour‘s issue on “chubby-cheeked, whipsmart, not conventionally attractive” women who in “no way would be an object of heated romantic interest in the real world.” To all of you ladies, I raise my glass! In the meantime, I’ll eat my salad, do my planks and have a damn burger.
Glamour still exists? Huh.
Why does anyone care what Glamour thinks?
There is a wide range of “attractive”. And the most important thing to put you in that range is character and personality. Plenty of otherwise attractive women become incredibly fugly by opening their mouths and exposing their stupidity/nastiness.
But she is fat. She’s plus size in my books.
