Part of running for president means having a good team behind you, having a campaign staffed by people who know what they are doing and will keep their candidate from being embarrassed. Donald Trump’s staffers aren’t exactly what you would call “competent”, though, which is how Donald Trump ended up doing a radio interview with Charlie Sykes, one of Wisconsin’s most popular talk radio hosts and an outspoken #NeverTrumper. It’s enough to make you wonder what in the world the campaign was thinking, because what happened was entirely predictable. Charlie Sykes hammered Donald Trump with hard questions, and Trump flailed helplessly like the amateur know-nothing buffoon that he is.

Just last week, Trump attacked Cruz’s wife Heidi, threatening to “spill the beans,” yet in his interview with Sykes agreed that spouses should be left out of the race.

“Who wouldn’t agree to that,” Trump tells Sykes. “I think it’s great. Again, I didn’t start it, he started it. If he didn’t start it, it would have never happened. Nothing like this would have ever happened.”

Charlie Sykes has been very open about the fact that he is anti-Trump, something the front runner admitted during the interview that he was not aware of. Just last week, Sykes threw his support behind Ted Cruz.

With the Wisconsin primary one week away, an ad set to air in the Badger State, quotes multiple times Trump has bashed women.

“Women are just going to have to see what I’ve done.” trump responded. “I’ve hired tremendous numbers of women. Women are in highest executive positions. I pay women, in most cases, more than I pay men, which is more than most people can say.”

Trump added that this is not an issue he wishes to continue to speak about on his campaign.

“I thought this was actually a dead issue until I just spoke to you,” he tells Sykes. “I’d rather be talking about trade, I’d rather be talking about the things that I’m best at, border security.”

So Sykes talked about policy. And whaddya know? That went horribly, too. Sykes slammed Trump for his false conservatism and asked why Wisconsin conservatives should think he’s anything but a giant fraud; Trump had no substantive answer. Instead, he launched into a brag about his supposed business success, in an obvious attempt to side-step the question, and Sykes called him out on it. Then, Trump talked about how he believed in free trade, and would use the threat of tariffs when he negotiated with other countries… before pointing out that he would never actually use tariffs. Sykes pounced on him for that, too, saying, “But you just said it’ll never happen, so you’ve basically said your negotiating ploy is a bluff.” Cue lots of stammering from Trump. It was a painful, disastrous interview.

The sad thing is that his supporters won’t care about any of this. They won’t care about that he is still lying about the threats and attacks on Heidi Cruz. They won’t care that he doesn’t have any actual substance to his political positions, no plans as to how he’ll implement everything he’s promising. They won’t care that he got destroyed by a radio host, and anyone else who bothers to ask him tough questions. They’ll make excuse after excuse after excuse, and shriek about how it’s “unfair”. People aren’t supposed to ask King Donald hard questions, remember? There is nothing logical about supporting Donald Trump, so being confronted with facts and logic and information isn’t about to start swaying his low-information morons away from him now. They’re too far gone, and they don’t tolerate any criticism of their newly appointed Dear Leader.

But still, with any luck, this will be a wake-up call to at least some people considering supporting him. If more people in the media, as well as people in the GOP, had done this from the beginning — been willing to ask the tough questions, hold Trump accountable for the despicable and disgusting things he says and does, hammer him on policy — we could have avoided this entire disaster.
