Strong Man: Five Reasons this is a very bad idea

A Strong Man sounds good, right? Someone to take care of all the problems in government and society, right? Why you don’t even have to think in this world. Or do you?

A strong man sounds awfully comforting in an increasingly messed up world. But why did the founders set up a particular system to govern the US? Why is there no branch set to be stronger than the other and why is it a bad thing to have the strong man? Here are five reasons that a strong man and specifically Trump is a Very Bad Idea:

  1. Modern history is rife with strong men and the mess they left behind. Names like Huey Long come to mind. In this election cycle Donald Trump is presenting as a strong man and a self-proclaimed populist.
  2. The strong man does not do well with disagreement or dissent. My fellow victory girls describe this behavior by Mr. Trump here and here.
  3. Our republic is not exactly healthy.  An Oligarchy or dictatorship is not a government model that is workable or ends well.
  4. If you did not like the last 7 years, why recreate it with someone you think is on your side? How is Trump so much better than Barack Obama?
  5. Looking at history, Trump is an insider not a populist.  His ultimate goal is power. And the video below explains why this is a very very bad idea.

“When republics start to fail, as ours is, it opens the door for demagogue, a strong man. People say they want somebody new,” Tuccille tells Reason’s Nick Gillespie.

I do not want to tell you what to think or demand you agree with me. Just please do your research from various sources before casting your vote or going all in for a candidate.

And to that end, here are some points Senator Ben Sasse from Nebraska made at the recent Conservative Policy Summit in Washington DC. In a speech stated:

“The idea that a ‘strong man’ can save us isn’t true,” Sasse, R-Neb., said. “What America needs is a constitutional recovery, not a Republican Barack Obama.”

In other words, go back to basics and don’t try to undermine the balance of power. What is government’s role then? Senator Sasse answers that rather well regarding the economy.

Joined in the morning session by House Speaker Paul Ryan, Sen. Joni Ernst, R-Iowa, and Rep. Mark Walker, R-N.C., Sasse called for a return to limited government, where government’s role isn’t so much “creating jobs” but creating a “nurturing environment” where jobs can be created.

Exactly what we need: less litigation and legislation and more real economic freedom.  Not to be puppets dancing to the whim of a would be emperor.

  • I Disagree says:

    You’re wrong.

We need a strongman… To provoke the progressives.

This society cannot be saved while preserving continuity of the state. Further, if the conservatives attempt secession, the progressives will fight to keep us in, because though they don’t admit it, they need us more tha.ln we need them.

What we must do is provoke the progressive masses into wanting secession, and making it happen over the resistance of the progressive leaders who know better. Then we just let thdm leave.

How do you define conservative and progressive? And do you think these designations are set in stone and immovable? A strong man is not conservative. Limited government is.

  • Appalled By The World says:

Sasse is right-limited government is the only way to go. Once the Progressives began expanding government with the likes of Woodrow Wilson this country was on the road to this current disaster it’s in. One way to fix things would be restricting voting rights-too many clueless sheeple whose main interest is to keep Uncle Sam as a part of their family have made politicians from both parties pander to them for far too long. As a result government has grown and grown into an all encompassing monster. From Wilson to FDR to LBJ to Emperor Obozo-these four are the main architects of the mess we’re in today by expanding government with promises of freebies and then some and by twisting the Constitution to the point that it is practically meaningless.

    • Gail Boer says:

True. I do think actually teaching people nothing is free and making the folks who get aid who are physically able to work do something to earn their money would be better than creating a culture of dependence. There is a reason our grandparents found welfare shameful.
