Donald Trump has said some things, particularly about illegal immigration, which have caused some conservatives to fist pump. Many like his brashness and his lack of political correctness. Now, however, the Mouth from Manhattan may have taken a bridge too far.

On Saturday morning’s C-Span broadcast, Trump took some swipes at Senator John McCain, claiming that “he’s a war hero because he was captured. I like people that weren’t captured.”

Yikes.

Needless to say, that comment upset a lot of people. A lot.

Mitt Romney weighed in on Twitter with a particularly caustic comment, especially coming from a man like Romney.

Stephen Hayes of The Weekly Standard reports that Trump won’t back down.

In fact, Trump doubled-down, even calling himself “Mr. Trump,” in a manner reminiscent to some of Kim Jong-un.

McCain is a war hero because he was shot down, injured, and held captive in North Vietnam for five years beginning in 1967. He remained in solitary confinement there for two years, tortured, and refused the opportunity for early release. He is permanently disabled as a result of his injuries and torturous treatment.

Here is a picture of John McCain, about 31 years of age, taken in the North Vietnamese prison. He was about 36 years of age when he was finally released.

Meanwhile, when he was in his early to mid-30’s, Donald Trump was enjoying fast times and high living as he built his real estate empire, resulting in glamorous coverage in the 1980’s like this:

Conservatives certainly have problems with John McCain’s political games as a Senator. We didn’t like it when he labeled various conservative Congressmen as “wacko-birds,” and in the Huffington Post, no less. But we honor the courage he displayed in that North Vietnamese hellhole, and for the service he gave to the nation as a Navy pilot. We will always commend that part of McCain’s life.

Donald Trump — Mr. Trump — whatever. Stop. Just. Stop.
