Carly Fiorina is a no-nonsense business woman, and a Republican candidate for the presidency that more and more people are beginning to see as a formidable opponent. She is savvy, intelligent, witty, and not afraid of a fight. She’s a strong conservative woman, and because I, too, am a strong conservative woman, I like her. No, I’m not endorsing her. I’m still undecided. I’m perusing the field, but I am impressed with her pointing out her Democratic female counterpart’s faults.
On Wednesday Fiorina appeared on MSNBC’s “Andrea Mitchell Reports” to discuss her campaign, and among the topics was Hillary’s track record – including the collapse of the Middle East and the failed Russian reset. She argued that “titles are just titles.”
“I come from a world where titles are just titles, and talk is just talk. It’s only in politics where titles and words mean a lot. In the rest of the world, it’s actually about what have you done, actions speak louder than words. People want to know are your words and your actions consistent and are they consistent over time. And so, I think when 82% of the American people now believe that there is a professional political class more interested in preserving its own power and privilege than it is in serving the American people, people expect basic questions to be asked of anyone running for president. ‘What have you done, are you trustworthy, are you transparent, will you answer questions?’”
She’s spot on. I was in Wisconsin this weekend visiting my husband’s family, and for the most part they are not interested in the world of politics. They’ve never really cared to pay much attention to the workings of Washington D.C. politics, but while I was there this weekend, talking with the “everyday Americans” that Hillary Clinton wants us to think she connects with, they all were so angry with Washington elites on both ends of the political spectrum. Fiorina is right. Americans are disenfranchised with the leadership in this country. We really do believe they care more about power and money than what is best for their fellow Americans.
Fiorina hit Clinton hard by saying that she did some “wonderful things” as Secretary of State, but that she also failed miserably at so much. She effectively said that Mrs. Clinton talks a big game, but fails on many, many levels.
“It’s also true that as Secretary of State she took women’s rights and human rights off the table for discussion with China. It’s also true as Secretary of State that she called Bashar al-Assad a positive reformer. It’s also true that in 2011, when she was Secretary of State, she said that Iraq was a free, stable, sovereign nation. And now we have a nation falling apart, Iranian influence growing, ISIS growing. It’s true that she said that she could reset our Russia — our relationship with Russia and Vladimir Putin is on the march. So, I think all of those things I just named go fundamentally to what is her track record.”
Andrea Mitchell was taking a hit to her gal, though, responding with an argument that “a lot of Republicans in the White House and in Congress supported these policies.” To which Fiorina responded in the affirmative, agreeing that the candidates on the Republican ticket have all been asked about their record on Iraq.
“And by the way, every single Republican candidate has been asked about their vote for the war in Iraq. The one person who’s not been asked that question, because she won’t answer the question is Hillary Clinton. One person who was on the job in 2011, when Iraq started to fall apart, was not the Republican nominees or — candidates for president, it’s Hillary Clinton. she hasn’t been asked yet. What would she do now in Iraq?”
She’s, once again, correct. Clinton hasn’t been asked about her voting record during her tenure in the Senate. No one in the main stream media is asking Mrs. Clinton about her time as the Secretary of State. What would Hill do in Iraq or with ISIS? No one knows! The MSM is too busy throwing the easy questions at her to be concerned with what Hillary and Bill think about important aspects of being the Commander-In-Chief.
Fiorina then outlined her plan for ISIS, stating that the Obama Administration has done nothing to help our allies in the Middle East fight against the rise of radical Islam, citing the promise of arms made to King Abdullah of Jordan following the immolation of the Jordanian pilot.
“I would do very specific things. First, instead of having a Camp David conference to talk our Arab allies into a bad deal with Iran, I would have had a Camp David conference to talk with our Arab allies about how we can support them to fight ISIS. Let me give you very specific examples. The Kurds have been asking us to arm them for three years, we still have not. The Jordanians have been asking us to provide them with bombs and materiel. We know King Abdullah of Jordan, I’ve known him for many years. He took the appropriate leadership steps when a Jordanian pilot was burned alive. He was here in this country asking us for bombs and materiel, we haven’t provided him with any of them. He’s now looking to China for that. The Egyptian president, a very brave and pious Muslim, who has said there is a cancer in the heart of Islam, has asked us to share intelligence. We are not. The Turks have asked us to help them topple Bashar al-Assad, we are not. There are a whole set of things that we’ve been asked to do by our allies who know this is their fight, and we’re not doing any of them.”
The interview concluded with Mitchell questioning Fiorina about equal pay for equal work. She, once again, answered the question, and then turned it back on Clinton and Obama.
“Of course I support equal pay for equal work. And that’s why, in 1963 when a law was passed guaranteeing that if a woman is being discriminated against in the workforce purely because of her gender she should take every advantage of the law. But I also know this — a seniority system, which exists in the federal government, that allows a man to watch pornography all day long in the federal government, and earn the same pay, pension, and benefits as a woman sitting next to him trying to do a good job, that is not equal pay for equal work. And the seniority system, and the federal government that promotes that seniority system, and the unions, as well, they’re not willing to talk about that. So, before the federal government or Hillary Clinton, who, by her own measures, is not paying women equally in her own office, nor is President Obama, before they lecture others, maybe they ought to look into their own offices, or look into the seniority system in the federal government.”
Carly Fiorina is not afraid of tough questions, and she isn’t afraid of going on the offensive and pointing out the hypocrisy of her opponents. I’m happy that she is getting more attention as we get further and further into the campaign season.
Find out what she is drinking and send a couple of barrels of it to the rest of the Republican candidates.
I’m glad she’s in the race as well. So far she’s been speaking common sense and asking the questions that should be asked.
My only quibble with her equal pay comment is that there is no pay gap between men and women once lifestyle/career choices are factored in. It’s a point that can’t be brought up enough and hopefully she’ll work it into future answers.
There’s about a 5% gap, once lifestyle and career choices are factored in.
Her comments about pay were definitely odd – why is she talking about a man looking at porn all day? where did that come from? But I think she was trying to get at the issue of merit and pay-for-performance, which is aligned with her criticism of Hillary having the title but not the record. But super awkward how she went there.
I look at it her comments this way. The gov’t is trying to tell American business owners how much their employees should be paid, and they are setting the regulations in terms of merit and pay-for-performance. She is also pointing out that they should look within their own house before setting the standards of others.
There are, and this has made the news, gov’t employees out there still raking in the salaries and perks because no one has fired that person. And that person should be fired because yes, he spent all day every day looking at porn. So, her larger point is, the gov’t wants to tell us what to do but won’t hold themselves to the standards they are pushing on us.
