Thomas Massie is on his way out of Congress, so apparently he figured he might as well pull the pin on one last grenade before he goes.
The Kentucky Republican took to the House floor Tuesday and introduced eight articles of impeachment against Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth. Eight, because apparently disagreeing with President Donald Trump’s foreign policy wasn’t dramatic enough. Massie says Hegseth is breaking the law, and with his own congressional career rapidly approaching its expiration date, why not burn the place down on the way out?
Republican Kentucky Rep. Thomas Massie announced Tuesday he will force a vote to impeach Secretary of War Pete Hegseth.
Massie accused Hegseth of “operating in contravention of three specific provisions of the War Powers Resolution of 1973.” The articles of impeachment included eight charges, including waging war in contravention and ignoring laws that minimize civilian casualties. – Daily Caller
Massie, remember, lost his Republican primary in May to former Navy SEAL Ed Gallrein, who had Trump’s endorsement. Republican voters in his district have already decided they would like to try someone else, but Massie still has a few months left in Washington and evidently plans to make them memorable.
And boy, is Massie proud of himself. He’s been promoting his impeachment stunt all over social media, making darn sure nobody misses his big moment on the way out.
Today in the House, I introduced Articles of Impeachment against @SecWar Hegseth.
The Articles outline how, among other things, Sec. Hegseth is abusing the powers of the DOD, operating without constitutional authority, and gambling with the lives of U.S. servicemen and women. pic.twitter.com/v6XxXouMS6

Strip away Massie’s 34 pages of impeachment articles and legal language and the obvious problem here is that most of his outrage is really aimed at the Trump administration’s foreign policy.
Donald Trump is Commander in Chief. Pete Hegseth didn’t sneak into the Pentagon one night, find the big red WAR button and start bombing Iran while Trump was asleep. He’s Trump’s Secretary of Defense, carrying out the military policy of the administration.
Massie believes Congress should have far more say over those decisions, and that’s certainly an argument he can make. Congress has enormous constitutional power over war, including legislation and funding, and there has been a fight between presidents and Congress over exactly where those lines are drawn for decades.
Because apparently if you’re going to make an exit, you might as well make sure everybody hears the door slam.
To be fair, Massie hasn’t exactly been sitting around waiting for impeachment to occur to him. He’s been fighting Trump over Iran and presidential war powers for quite some time, introducing War Powers resolutions and trying to get Congress to rein in the administration’s military actions.
Those efforts haven’t gotten him what he wanted, and Massie now says he’s exhausted the other legislative options. With his time in Congress running out, he’s moved on to impeachment; not one article, not two, but eight of them against Pete Hegseth. So there, that’ll show ’em.
What does Massie do when his time in Congress finally runs out? Maybe there’s a VP slot waiting for him on the Tucker Carlson 2028 ticket. He’s already been hanging out with the crowd trying to talk Tucker into running, so at least he won’t have to send in a résumé.
