As we have all learned every single time one of these stories comes up, teachers and school officials always assume the worst. Pop Tarts and fingers are now guns. So, of course, when 14 year old Ahmed Mohamed brought in a homemade digital clock, what did they do?
Why, the school called the police, claiming it was a bomb.
Mohamed told the News that he built the clock in about 20 minutes Sunday evening using a pencil case, a circuit board, and a power supply wired to a digital display. Mohamed said he showed it to his engineering teacher Monday morning.
“He was like, ‘That’s really nice,'” Mohamed told the paper. “‘I would advise you not to show any other teachers.'”
Later in the day, the News reported, Mohamed’s English teacher complained when the clock beeped in the middle of a lesson. When Mohamed showed her the device after class, he claims she told him, “It looks like a bomb.”
“It doesn’t look like a bomb to me,” Mohamed says he told her. The teacher kept the device, and the school’s principal and a police officer pulled Mohamed out of class and brought him to a room where five other officers questioned him and searched his belongings.
One has to ask at this point, if the engineering teacher is telling him “don’t show any other teachers,” did he have an inkling that an English teacher might look at this clock, see wires, and assume “bomb”? And if so, why didn’t the teacher offer to keep it until the end of the day to avoid all of this hassle???
But no, there was no common sense or precautions shown by any of the adults involved. So Ahmed was arrested on suspicion of bringing in a “hoax bomb.”

And once the story got out, the hashtag #IStandWithAhmed took off.
While some want to blame Islamophobia….
Teenager brings in homemade clock = bright future in robotics. Muslim kid does the same = he has created Ultron. #IStandWithAhmed

Most kids who made a homemade clock in 20 minutes would be hailed as Jimmy Neutron. Muslim Kid? Potential bomb maker. Sad. #IStandWithAhmed

I’m more inclined to blame the idiotic zero tolerance policies and the actions of all the adults involved here, rather than Islamophobia. Parents didn’t stop him from bringing it to school. The engineering teacher didn’t attempt to avert any issues by keeping it for Ahmed until the end of the day. The English teacher probably thought she was going to have her 15 minutes of fame by finding a bomb in the classroom. The police were forced to treat it seriously, and now that the story has gained international attention, they were forced to give a press conference announcing that there are no charges.
At a press conference this morning, Irving Police Chief Larry Boyd said Ahmed Mohamed was arrested for bringing “a hoax bomb” to school — not a clock, as Mohamed said he repeatedly told his teachers.
But, Boyd said, “we are confident it’s not an explosive device” intended to cause “alarm.” Rather, he said, officers determined it was “a hoax bomb” and a “naive accident.”
As a result, he said, no charges will be filed against Ahmed, and “the case is considered closed.” He also said “the reaction would have been the same regardless” of the student’s skin color.
I’m sure the school district will try to cover themselves legally, but they will probably have to eat a little crow as well. And yes, I am certain that any kid who shows a clueless English teacher in a public school a homemade digital clock, regardless of religion or skin color, will have the police called on them. Welcome to the world of zero tolerance, Ahmed.
Well bomb making is in their genes…….
I”M KIDDING !!!!
He also said “the reaction would have been the same regardless” of the student’s skin color.
Alas, true words from the zero tolerance crowd.
