The Socialists Are Coming, And Mamdani Is Just The Beginning

Zohran Mamdani is not the end goal for the socialists. He is just the beginning.

Toni covered the Democratic Socialists of America’s plan to infiltrate all sorts of political offices yesterday, but there were two other races that featured socialists running for mayor. And as of right now, those haven’t quite turned out the way the socialist wing of the left had planned.

First is the mayoral race in Minneapolis, which saw incumbent Mayor Jacob Frey prevail over Ilhan Omar’s chosen socialist candidate, Omar Fateh. We covered the shenanigans in the endorsement process during the campaign, but it seemed Fateh was going to be part of the socialists’ wave that caught New York City. But thanks to ranked choice voting, and tribal grudges, Frey managed to eke out the win.

Minneapolis Democratic Mayor Jacob Frey defeated democratic socialist Omar Fateh and 13 other challengers Wednesday during the final round of counting in the city’s ranked-choice voting election.

Frey, who secured a third term, led Fateh by about 10 percentage points after Tuesday night’s first round of counting but didn’t cross the 50%-plus-one-vote threshold he needed to win outright.

According to final but unofficial results posted by the city, Frey got 50.03% of the vote in the second and final round to 44.37% for Fateh. Frey’s finish was an improvement from his 49.1% in 2021.

The way ranked-choice voting works in Minneapolis, if no candidate clears the threshold in the first round, candidates with the fewest votes are eliminated for the next round of counting, while second- and third-choice rankings are allocated to the surviving candidates.

Wait, you say. Tribal grudges? Oh yes. Fateh and Ilhan Omar are apparently part of the same tribal clan, and a rival tribe refused to vote for Fateh and backed Jacob Frey instead.

And Frey must know this, because boy, did he pander all over the place in his victory speech.

So while Fateh lost, Frey – who let Minneapolis burn during the George Floyd riots on his watch – is no prize. He just isn’t an avowed socialist.

The second race that is still way up in the air is the mayoral race in Seattle. Right now, incumbent Bruce Harrell is holding a razor-thin lead over socialist challenger Katie Wilson. And thanks to the glacial pace of counting the mail-in ballots in King County, there will be no updates to the vote tally until Monday. However, Decision Desk decided to call the race for Harrell.

Decision Desk has built a reputation of calling races correctly, but this might be an instance where they are going to end up with egg on their faces. (I sincerely hope I am wrong, and they are right.) Harrell is not a good mayor, and is a leftist Democrat, but Katie Wilson is basically the female and white version of Zohran Mamdani, living on the handouts of her parents and working at a nonprofit. Being mayor would be her first “real” job. Will Seattle end up dodging the socialist bullet this time? We will have to wait and see as the vote totals trickle in.

Mamdani might end up being the only big win for the socialists for this election cycle – but they are laying the groundwork for more. And if we ignore them, we will all be in trouble. Fox News listed off five candidates in five different states that the Democratic Socialists – or their fellow travelers – are putting forward. This includes Nazi tattoo lover Graham Platner in Maine, who is looking to win the Democrat primary for Senate to challenge Susan Collins. Another name we’ve heard before is Saikat Chakrabarti, who once was AOC’s chief of staff. He’s now eyeing Nancy Pelosi’s soon-to-be-vacated House seat in San Francisco, and planned on challenging Pelosi herself before she announced her retirement from the House. Chakrabarti will have other big name challengers, like state senator Scott Wiener, and possibly Pelosi’s daughter Christine.

Other names are less well known, but are gaining notoriety. Kat Abughazaleh, who is running in Illinois, got herself indicted for attacking an ICE vehicle in Chicago. When asked about it in an interview, she simply bailed.

The final two names listed by Fox News are Aftyn Behn in Tennessee, who will be attempting to win a special election for the House in December, and Dr. Abdul El-Sayed in Michigan, a “Medicare for all” promoter who will be entering the Democratic primary for the Senate.

This list is by no means comprehensive, but it is a warning. The socialists are making a big play to gut American democracy and captialism from the inside. Zohran Mamdani is just the herald of the coming wave. But it sure is going to be fascinating to see if those who voted for him now respond for his demand for money for his transition team – and react to the lack of free stuff that they believe they are owed.

We’re all going to be treated to quite a show in New York City over the next four years. I would prefer that the voters not give Mamdani any more company in elected office.
