In a very jarring note at the Olympics, a group of drag queens enacted a show that literally mocked The Last Supper.
The 2024 Paris Olympics kicked off Friday with the procession of athletes, the lighting of the Olympic torch — and an apparent replication of “The Last Supper” performed by drag queens.
Organizers were accused of ridiculing Christianity by featuring more than a dozen drag entertainers posing for a scene reminiscent of the Leonardo da Vinci masterpiece showing Jesus and his disciples sharing their last Passover meal before his betrayal, trial and crucifixion on the cross.
“Drag queens mock Christianity during the Opening Ceremony of the Olympics in Paris as they attempt to recreate da Vinci’s painting of Jesus’ Last Supper,” said Shane Pruitt, a Texas pastor and author, on X. “Not only are Christians the only people that it is socially acceptable to mock … it’s actually celebrated and put front and center.”

Many folks across social media are claiming this outrage is misplaced. We shouldn’t be dismayed that a group of drag queens, including a child and a naked man adorned in blue paint and Christmas lights enact a demented portrayal of The Last Supper. We are just supposed to nod approvingly and applaud their “art.”

According to the Olympic Committee who put on this show (which, by the way, included a guillotined Marie Antoinette), we didn’t see the thing we thought we saw.
The Olympics said the performance was an “interpretation of the Greek God [of wine and festivity] Dionysus” to make “us aware of the absurdity of violence between human beings.”
But social media users felt that the group was making fun of Christianity and even French politicians denounced the show.
Practicing Catholic Marion Maréchal took to X, saying: “To all the Christians of the world who are watching the #Paris2024 ceremony and felt insulted by this drag queen parody of the Last Supper, know that it is not France that is speaking but a left-wing minority ready for any provocation.”

As many are eloquently pointing out, such as Legal Insurrection’s Mary Chastain, The Last Supper falls on Holy Thursday. With this, the Olympics degraded one of the most important parts of Christianity. It was Jesus Last Supper and shortly after, he was betrayed.
What we are seeing is not just a parody or mockery of Christianity. No, what was on display at the Olympics was a degradation.
And yet, we are supposed to be ok with this and stop with the false outrage. Again, NO. What happened there makes a mockery of my faith and the faith of so many others around the world.
The Olympics is supposed to be about a celebration of athletes and their accomplishments. It’s supposed to be about determination, perseverance, and at times just plain grit and courage.
The hideous drag queen act making a mockery of The Last Supper was not that. And I’m sure it was an affront to many of the Christian athletes in attendance.

Yes, they are telling us who they really are. And yet, as both Mary and Bishop Barron point out, they won’t mock ANY other religion, especially the Muslim religion. Why? They will end up dead. What happened with Charlie Hebdo is a prime example. But it’s completely ok to make a mockery of Christian faith. Again, no, no it is not.
Yes, there were unforgettable moments during the Opening Ceremony. The best, IMO was Celine Dion. She’s battling a disease for which there is no cure. Yet her grit, determination, and perseverance were on display last night.
Yet to have a group of drag queens put on a display that mocks The Last Supper and the Christian faith of millions around the world is flat out unacceptable. Period.

Firstly: How many depictions of Bacchanal have you seem? Especially ones that look like this? Obviously not a goddamn lot, starting with the fact that (in addition to being even less SFW than this eyesore was), the traditional portrayal and vantage point for it (especially this shot) were significantly different. In particular the participants in a Bacchanal are usually portrayed as either laying down, or standing up.
