Attention Shoppers! Do we have a BARGAIN for you! Yes, that’s right, get your Black Friday Healthcare RIGHT HERE!
No, this isn’t a joke. It seems that the federal government has decided to get into the shopping game in a big way. According to The Hill:
Kevin Counihan, CEO of the healthcare marketplace, announced Wednesday that the government has partnered with Westfield Shopping Centers to help “get the word out” about this year’s open enrollment.
Westfield is one of the country’s largest chains of malls, with about 40 locations across the U.S.
The partnership is part of a nationwide outreach campaign by the Department of Health and Human Services (HHS), which is aiming for 9 million new sign-ups by next year.
For all the Black Friday shoppers hunting for deals in New Jersey, Connecticut, Illinois, Maryland, New York, Washington State, Florida, and California; you can add that all important sign-up for Obamacare to your list. I mean really, doesn’t everyone want to spend part of their holiday shopping time signing up for healthcare? Evidently the White House and HHS Secretary Sylvia Burwell seem to think so. In fact, she’s so certain that everyone’s main topic of conversation is healthcare, that she tweeted this little gem yesterday:
If you're talking turkey today, make sure you're also talking health care with your family & friends. #GetCovered #HappyThanksgiving

I can’t wait to see what she tweets next! By the way, Black Friday isn’t the only prime shopping day that you can sign up for Obamacare. There will be folks out and about on Small Business Saturday, and we’ll likely see some type of ads scrolling across various websites and tv screens on Cyber Monday. I guess since the celebrity driven ad campaign last year didn’t work so well, they are trying a new tactic.
In fact, there are multiple tiers to this Christmas health care shopping extravaganza! If you are a homeowner buying a home, lets add healthcare to your purchase price. How about planning that all-important wedding or having a baby? Rachana Pradhan of Politico reports:
The XO Group, which owns popular websites like The Knot and The Bump, will use its sites to reach women who may be on the verge of getting married or having a baby. Such life events can trigger a change in health insurance.
Yes indeed, plan your wedding and get covered all at the same time. You know, planning a wedding is stressful enough. I’d say having Obamacare shoved in front of your face at that time would send any Bridezilla into overdrive! If you want to be extra daring and live REALLY dangerously; go right ahead and have the pregnant lady hopped up on baby hormones spend hours signing up for Obamacare. My money is on the soon-to-be mom in that contest.
Black Friday is typically a extra crazy shopping day. The malls and stores oftentimes look like this:
Black Friday shopping can be quite the experience. It can be fun, but sometimes shoppers have ended their day with yelling or even bloodshed. Spending your day shopping for ACA or Obamacare that offers such wonderful perks like increased prices , the loss of your doctors, and inflating numbers, just doesn’t have the same verve as getting that cashmere sweater at 60% off.
And that’s the point right there. People will be looking for the best bargain at the LOWEST price with the option of returning the item if they don’t like it. You can shop for Obamacare as it is FOR sale. However, its not ON sale. And you can’t return it if you don’t like it without paying a penalty. People will be out on Black Friday to shop for toys, clothes, that 60″ TV, laptops, and the latest craze. Whether the ACA brain trust likes it or not, Obamacare is NOT the latest craze, nor is it the Black Friday shopping bargain they think it is.
