Federal authorities have arrested Enrique Marquez, the man who allegedly purchased the two AR-15s that were used in the San Bernardino terror attack by Syed Farook and Tashfeen Malik. The 24 year old has supposedly admitted that he purchased the weapons in order to keep Farook’s name away from a background check.
The 24-year-old Riverside resident once lived next door to Farook and purchased two of the semiautomatic rifles that Farook and his wife, Tashfeen Malik, used in the attack that killed 14 people.
The precise charges against Marquez and the timing of when they will be made public remain uncertain. Federal prosecutors are preparing a formal charging document and could file it later today or possibly tomorrow, according to federal law enforcement officials who were not authorized to speak about the case publicly. Marquez could face both state and federal charges in connection with transfer of the two rifles to Farook and Malik.
We are also getting confirmation that yes, Marquez was quite deeply involved in Farook’s life, including marrying a relative of his.
Marquez appeared to have been greatly influenced by Farook. Although Farook was known for keeping to himself, he struck up a friendship with Marquez and the two were often seen tinkering on old cars together. Marquez converted to Islam and married a member of Farook’s extended family, a Russian emigre.
There were allegedly also plans for a terror attack as far back as 2012, which Marquez himself would have been involved in, but was not carried out. And when the actual attack happened, Marquez ran for it and checked himself into a mental hospital. He must have known that the evidence would eventually point back to him. And while he may not have pulled the trigger, he aided and abetted terror with his straw purchase. Let the full weight of the law fall on his head.
UPDATE 2:30 PM PT:
The charges have been announced (the criminal complaint can be seen here). There are three federal charges.
– Conspiring to provide material support to terrorists
– Making a false statement in connection with the acquisition of firearms
– Fraud and misuse of visas, permits, and other documents
The last charge is directed at the marriage between Marquez and Farook’s relative, which authorities are now saying was a sham marriage in order to allow the relative to emigrate to the United States.
