When a scrawny, stray mutt befriended National Guard soldiers from New York while on patrol in Afghanistan, she was quickly adopted as their mascot and named “Sheba”. She was loved and became part of their “family” — eating their MRE’s and beef jerky and sometimes, going out on patrol with them. Sheba eventually had 7 puppies that the soldiers named Cadence, Rocky, Sarah, Jack, Buckeye, Breezy and Harris. Relatives of the soldiers began sending them bags of dog food from home for Sheba and her growing family. Then the guys got the news… their base would be closed as part of the U.S. draw down in Afghanistan. It broke their hearts to think of leaving Sheba and her 7 pups and they decided that just wasn’t happening.
They decided to try to bring them all back to the States to live with them. So through contacts at home, and the critical help of a Long Island group called Guardians of Rescue and the group Nowzad Dogs, which has for years collected donations to bring dogs back from combat zones, they were able to get Sheba and all 7 of her puppies out of the sandbox.
The soldiers were re-united with Sheba and her pups, who are now six months old, just this past week. Sheba, who is already a service dog, is being assessed to be a PTSD therapy dog (the best therapy dog any soldier could know I imagine!) and the puppies are all going to soldiers’ homes.
Yeah. It’s a sweet story to be sure. If you can donate to either of the dog rescue groups, see the their links above. And as always, God bless our troops, who go through so much when deployed yet they still cared for a homeless stray and her puppies.
