Rolling Stone Managing Editor, Will Dana Steps Down on August 7th

What’s a skinny-leg-jeans-wearing college hipster to do?

In light of advancing lawsuits against Wenner Media, accusing Rolling Stone for falsely reporting a University of Virginia Fraternity of a gang rape, Mr. Dana will leave his post of Managing Editor of the magazine. The article, “A Rape on Campus,” told of a woman dubbed “Jackie,” being led into a darkened room from a party, thrown through a glass table and raped over three hours by several brothers as part of Phi Kappa Psi fraternity.

Despite the efforts to retract the article after The Columbia Journalism Review published an investigation of the story’s publication, none of the other Rolling Stone staff members associated with the original story to include reporter Sabrina Rubin Erdely were terminated.

“We would like to apologize to our readers and to all of those who were damaged by our story and the ensuing fallout, including members of the Phi Kappa Psi fraternity and UVA administrators and students. Sexual assault is a serious problem on college campuses, and it is important that rape victims feel comfortable stepping forward. It saddens us to think that their willingness to do so might be diminished by our failings.” Will Dana, Managing Editor in the April 2015 issue of Rolling Stone.

I would go up to a college hipster hanging at Urban Outfitters right now and console them but…nah. They will always and forever have hipster, Emma-Mattress-Girl-Gone-Porn-Star-Sulkowicz.

“After 19 years at Rolling Stone, I have decided that it is time to move on. It has been a great ride and I loved it even more than I imagined I would. I am as excited to see where the magazine goes next as I was in the summer of 1978 when I bought my first issue.”-Will Dana

Dana has held the position of Managing Editor of Rolling Stone since 2005 and can not only be responsible for the journalistic “excellence” of “A Rape on Campus” but also this touching tribute:

THE BOMBER. Oh, isn’t he dreamy? Just like Jim Morrison back in the day. (Gag.)

Reporter Janet Reitman attempts to humanize Dzhokhar “Jahar” Tsarnaev in this piece, calling him a “charming kid with a bright future”, who was “a beautiful, tousle-haired boy with a gentle demeanor, soulful brown eyes and the kind of shy, laid-back manner that made him that dude you could always just vibe with.” He was “just a normal American kid,” as his friends described him, who liked soccer, hip-hop, girls; obsessed over The Walking Dead and Game of Thrones; and smoked a copious amount of weed.”

Yep. A “normal” American boy who “smoked copious amounts of weed.” He fits right in with their demo!

This was also part of that article from July of 2013:

“Our hearts go out to the victims of the Boston Marathon bombing, and our thoughts are always with them and their families. The cover story we are publishing this week falls within the traditions of journalism and Rolling Stone’s long-standing commitment to serious and thoughtful coverage of the most important political and cultural issues of our day. The fact that Dzhokhar Tsarnaev is young, and in the same age group as many of our readers, makes it all the more important for us to examine the complexities of this issue and gain a more complete understanding of how a tragedy like this happens.” –THE EDITORS

Let’s get real here. “Serious and thoughtful” coverage? By humanizing a killer who bombed innocents in the name of Jihad? It’s not that complex, if you ask me. Get off your pseudo-intellectual high horses already. “Traditions of journalism?” By publishing lies?

Rolling Stone has been around since 1967. No bad will or intentions intended on my part to Will Dana-I don’t know the guy. I am sure he will land on his feet and Wenner Media will pick another liberal “committed to journalistic excellence” and pay him or her a fat six figures to create hysteria and romanticize terrorism. And the handle-bar mustached boys and girls in cut off shorts donning the flannel (that looked much better on us in the ’80s) will eat it right up.

And yet, there they are again, pointing their collective “Rapist!!” finger at Donald Trump, likening him to Bill Cosby. Never mind that his former wife has refuted the story. (No, I’m not defending him, just pointing out RS’s continued lackadaisical relationship with the facts.) Lesson NOT learned.

Very true, Jodi! Funny how “journalistic excellence” is defined by bias (the “correct” bias, that is.) Any differing opinions are obviously “uneducated” and “irresponsible.”
