Yesterday a gunman went on a shooting spree in Toronto, Canada, killing two people and injuring 13 others before being nabbed by police. The murderer Faisal Hussain fired a handgun into restaurants and cafes in Toronto’s Greektown neighborhood before dying in a shootout with police, killing a 10-year-old girl and an 18-year-old woman. Did the authorities call it terrorism? Not yet. Twenty-four hours after the event, we still don’t know the motive for the massacre.
It is instructive to read media reports on this event. The family immediately put out a statement, claiming their good boy was just psychotic and mentally ill (well, DUH – just how unhinged does one have to be to shoot a bunch of innocent people and murder a child?), and police – almost 24 hours later – refused to “speculate on a motive,” even though they refused to rule out terrorism.
But even as everyone refused to speculate on a motive, they certainly wasted no time calling for yet more gun control in Canada.
The Canadian Firearms Act, the Criminal Code, and their subordinate regulations govern gun ownership in Canada.
There are age restrictions, registration, criminal and psychiatric checks, and third party character references for each gun license applicant are required. There are also storage and transportation regulations. In short, every “common sense” regulation the gun grabbers shriek they want is already in use in Canada – and gun control regulations are even more stringent in Toronto.
Gee, it’s as if gun control doesn’t work!
According to Toronto Mayor John Tory, it apparently doesn’t.
“I’ve said for some time that the city has a gun problem, and that guns are far too readily available to far too many people,” Mr. Tory said. “There are far too many people carrying around guns in our region and our city who should not have them.”
I’m not going to be the person to speculate about terrorism right now. I will point out that authorities are being super cautious before ascribing the motive to terror, but not too cautious about putting out a clarion call to further deprive the citizens of their right to keep and bear arms.
But if I were to speculate…
I would remind everyone that ISIS and al-Qa’ida propaganda videos are still available online, and new media – videos, magazines, and online publications – are being produced.
I would remind everyone that ISIS targets lonely, disgruntled, unstable malcontents to carry out terrorist acts on its behalf in the West, to include mentally ill recruits.
And I would remind everyone that the majority of those who commit terrorist acts in the United States are born or naturalized, and radicalized here. There’s little reason to assume that the terrorist attacks in Canada are different. Just because we haven’t seen reporting about this latest guy screeching “ALLAHU AKBAR!” while he mowed down innocent people, doesn’t mean he wasn’t radicalized or that this wasn’t a case of Islamic extremism.
I would also remind you that there was a package that the police had to detonate.
And one last thing…
Earlier on Monday, Toronto Mayor John Tory called for stricter gun control, denouncing the city’s “gun problem” and asking, “why does anyone in this city need to have a gun at all?”
Considering Hussain walked around unimpeded, randomly firing his handgun into crowds and restaurants for at least several minutes before the police showed up, wounding multiple people and murdering two, and not a single person was able to intervene.
And Tory has the unmitigated gall to question why anyone would need a tool of self defense?
Jackass.
In the next few days there will be a lot of revelations about the motives for this tragic acts. The media will spin the event to drive the focus away from radical Islam – regardless of whether Hussain was radicalized and acting on inspiration of ISIS or al-Qa’ida or not.
But the calls for gun control will intensify. You can be sure of that.
Fasal Hussain? Those Amish get crazy with it and they can’t get along with anyone else…oh wait.
Once the guns are gone a glorious utopia will commence. Trees, bats, sticks, rocks, clubs, metal pipes, hands, fists and human nature won’t exist anymore.
The number one problem with statist utopianism? They act as if human nature doesn’t exist.
In a country where purchasing a handgun is a true challenge, the solution is to make it harder? I’m going out on a limb here but I think young Hussain didn’t go through the legal hoops in order to get his weapon. He got it the old fashioned way; he stole it or got it some other illegal way.
claiming their good boy was just psychotic and mentally ill
criminal and psychiatric checks, and third party character references
Hmmmm….. seems something didn’t work here……….
I would remind everyone that ISIS and al-Qa’ida….
I would remind everyone that you don’t have to belong to an identified terror group to be an islamic terrorist. It’s enough to be a muslim who follows one of the fundamentalist preachers.
“why does anyone in this city need to have a gun at all?”
Well, because this kind of s#!+ happens, you brainless meat sack.
“Why do I carry a gun? Because a cop is too damn heavy!”
for at least several minutes before the police showed up
“Because, when seconds count, the police are just minutes away.”
Which one was it recently where the cops got there within 60 seconds? That’s an amazing response time. And the bad guy still shot a bunch of people.
Look, you pusillanimous numpty coccygodynia, the right to preserve our own lives in the face of an illegal threat is the most fundamental right inherent to humanity, and a firearm is the most efficient way to enforce that right. I don’t have to look to the state to protect me.
Now bugger off. This free man has some life, liberty and pursuit of happiness to enjoy.
(Ah yes, the recent 60 second response time was at the newspaper shooting in MD.)
“It’s enough to be a muslim who follows one of the fundamentalist preachers.”
Or actually read and follow the Koran.
refused to “speculate on a motive,”.. the Muslims have got to be thinking: “WTF do we have to do to get a little jihad credit here.”
In Canada, all holders of a valid PAL or RPAL undergo a criminal background check every day.If the perpetrator had any mental issues prior to applying for a PAL, he would have been denied possession . Any such
issues during the time (5 years) or any criminal action , the PAL is revoked. It is highly unlikely that the perp legally obtained the firearm but as of yet l am not aware of any media covering this fact.( Not that the Canadian news media would even fact check any firearms laws anyway.)
Canada is full of people who hope that their chains will rest lightly upon them and their posterity.
Pat Buchanan once dubbed it “Soviet Canuckistan”.
“deprive the citizens of their right to keep and bear arms”
Canada recognizes no such right. They are “free” purely at the whim of the government.
Canuck here. A couple of things strike me as odd in this whole thing.
Firstly, on July 12, Toronto was on high alert over a potential threat that did not materialize at that point in time, and then this happens a week and a half later. Is this related, or only a coincidence?
Secondly, the police where quite quick to release the perpetrator’s age, but when the name finally was released it was immediately – we’re talking minutes here – followed by a statement from the family that could only have been produced by a PR professional.
Thirdly, if you observe any of the available video, this guy was no stranger to shooting with that stance. I would lay dollars to doughnuts that he didn’t belong to one of the few shooting clubs left in Toronto, so where did he learn to shoot? If he was under treatment for mental illness he would never be issues the RPAL required to own a restricted firearm or join a shooting club, as an earlier commentator pointed out. So, just where did he get a semi-auto (without an RPAL) with a double stacked magazine (which are highly illegal in Canada)? I’m calling the double stacked because he was firing off more than the 10 shots that legal Canadian purchased magazines are pinned at.
I doubt we will get any satisfactory answers, since asking the questions in the first place is un-Canadian or something.
You notice that the police have said NOTHING about if his having the pistol was legal or illegal.
If illegal then their call for Gun Control would be stupid.
You know the gun was illegal. The police are delaying telling anybody that until the call for Gun Control has made its mark. Then the police will quietly say the gun was illegally obtained.
God, don’t you love how the police state works?
Why won’t these leftists political idiots recognise a human truism: “When weapons are outlawed, only outlaws will have weapons”. Robin Hood was supposed to have been one of the ‘good guys’, but he was still an outlaw. I believe the same thing held for the Swiss William Tell. But then, maybe these two characters SHOULD be the models to emulate!
