Jimmy Kimmel On Indefinite Leave As ABC Affiliates Dump Him

The people are speaking about Jimmy Kimmel, and ABC – and parent company Disney – had to listen.

Disney, to be blunt, is in no mood for Jimmy Kimmel’s shenanigans. On Monday, the so-called “comedian” decided to parrot the talking points from the far left, and claim that Charlie Kirk’s alleged assassin was “ackshually” MAGA. This was Kimmel’s exact quote:

“We hit some new lows over the weekend with the MAGA gang desperately trying to characterize this kid who murdered Charlie Kirk as anything other than one of them and doing everything they can to score political points from it,” Kimmel said.

Now, by Monday, we already knew that the shooter had indeed inscribed Antifa and trans references on the cartridges used in the rifle. We knew his family was describing his politics as more left-leaning than theirs. At that point, there was no credible evidence that the shooter was “MAGA.” So everything Jimmy Kimmel had said was a lie, and was proved to be even more of a lie when the charging documents were filed and released on Tuesday. And yet, there was no acknowledgment or apology by Kimmel, not even a half-assed one.

Disney has lost a whole lot of money in legal settlements lately, between an undisclosed settlement with Gina Carano and paying President Trump after George Stephanopoulos opened his big mouth on ABC. The last thing they wanted was yet another potential lawsuit or settlement on their hands. And they certainly are not in the mood to be losing money by having ABC affiliates dump their shows. But that is exactly what Nexstar announced they were going to do on Wednesday evening.

Nexstar Media Group, Inc. (NASDAQ: NXST), today announced that the company’s owned and partner television stations affiliated with the ABC Television Network will preempt “Jimmy Kimmel Live!” for the foreseeable future beginning with tonight’s show. Nexstar strongly objects to recent comments made by Mr. Kimmel concerning the killing of Charlie Kirk and will replace the show with other programming in its ABC-affiliated markets.

“Mr. Kimmel’s comments about the death of Mr. Kirk are offensive and insensitive at a critical time in our national political discourse, and we do not believe they reflect the spectrum of opinions, views, or values of the local communities in which we are located,” said Andrew Alford, President of Nexstar’s broadcasting division. “Continuing to give Mr. Kimmel a broadcast platform in the communities we serve is simply not in the public interest at the current time, and we have made the difficult decision to preempt his show in an effort to let cooler heads prevail as we move toward the resumption of respectful, constructive dialogue.”

Before Nexstar made their announcement, Federal Communications Commission Chairman Brendan Carr noted that ABC could find themselves in legal trouble if Kimmel’s actions weren’t addressed.

“Any license granted by us at the FCC, that comes with it an obligation to operate in the public interest,” Carr said, explaining federal regulations governing licensed TV stations which prohibit “news distortion.”

“Frankly, when you see stuff like this, I mean, look, we can do this the easy way or the hard way,” Carr continued. “These companies can find ways to change conduct and take action, frankly on Kimmel, or, you know, there’s going to be additional work for the FCC ahead.”

The FCC chairman said a public apology from Kimmel would be “a very reasonable, minimal step” for the comedian, ABC and parent company Disney to take.

“There are calls for Kimmel to be fired,” Carr noted. “I think, you know, you could certainly see a path forward for a suspension over this. And, again, you know, the FCC is going to have remedies that we could look at. This is a very, very serious issue right now for Disney.”

After Nexstar made their announcement, Sinclair Broadcasting then decided their ABC affiliates would be dumping Jimmy Kimmel as well.

As discussed with ABC earlier today, Sinclair decided to indefinitely preempt “Jimmy Kimmel Live!” beginning tonight. Following these discussions, ABC has suspended production of “Jimmy Kimmel Live!”

“Mr. Kimmel’s remarks were inappropriate and deeply insensitive at a critical moment for our country,” said Vice Chairman Jason Smith. “We believe broadcasters have a responsibility to educate and elevate respectful, constructive dialogue in our communities. We appreciate FCC Chairman Carr’s remarks today and this incident highlights the critical need for the FCC to take immediate regulatory action to address control held over local broadcasters by the big national networks.”

Sinclair’s ABC stations will air a special in remembrance of Charlie Kirk this Friday, during Jimmy Kimmel Live’s timeslot. The special will also air across all Sinclair stations this weekend. In addition, Sinclair is offering the special to all ABC affiliates across the country.

Sinclair will not lift the suspension of “Jimmy Kimmel Live!” on our stations until formal discussions are held with ABC regarding the network’s commitment to professionalism and accountability.

It was at this point that Disney threw in the towel.

In the hours leading up to the decision to pull Kimmel, two sources familiar with the matter say, senior executives at ABC, its owner Disney, and affiliates convened emergency meetings to figure out how to minimize the damage. Multiple execs felt that Kimmel had not actually said anything over the line, the two sources say, but the threat of Trump administration retaliation loomed.

“They were pissing themselves all day,” one ABC insider tells Rolling Stone.

Disney/ABC announced that “Jimmy Kimmel Live!” would be “pre-empted indefinitely.” Reportedly, Jimmy Kimmel is furious and wants out of his contract.

Sources told the outlet that the network’s decision is the “last straw” for Kimmel, who is now “actively looking” to break out of his contract and end his relationship with ABC.

“Jimmy is pissed over the decision to suspend him and the show and he isn’t going to take this lightly, as he is actively looking for ways to get out of his contract,” the source said, with another insisting they’ve “never seen Kimmel this angry.”

Naturally, Kimmel’s fellow travellers in media were shocked, SHOCKED, that Disney/ABC would make this move, blaming the FCC for exerting pressure on Disney. The hysteria from Brian Stelter and Jake Tapper was palpable.

Stelter: “Kimmel was expressing what we’ve heard some other liberals say in recent days that the motives are unclear and that maybe the suspect in this case was a Republican or was some sort of far right fringe figure. Of course, there has been a lot of discussion about that in recent days. There’s a lot of evidence pointing in other directions about the suspect, but Kimmel was on the air talking about this, making a very serious commentary amid his jokes in his monologue Monday night.”

Tapper later added his own take: “[W]hat he said specifically was, ‘the MAGA gang is desperately trying to characterize this kid who murdered Charlie Kirk as anything other than one of them and doing everything they can to score political points from it.’ That can be read in several ways. That could be heard in several ways. It could also be interpreted. It could also be argued, he’s saying that what the MAGA gang is doing is just trying to make sure that they don’t have any ownership of it, not necessarily that that this killer, this horrible person, was part of them.”

For his part, Brendan Carr was pleased, though seemed honestly surprised that the show had been taken off the air.

“This action today by NexStar and Sinclair, frankly, it’s unprecedented,” Carr told Fox News host Sean Hannity. “I can’t imagine another time when we’ve had local broadcasters tell a national programmer like Disney that your content no longer meets the needs and the values of our community.”

Now, there can be an argument that Carr’s comments started the ball rolling. But once the affiliates decided to act, Disney was backed into a corner – and Kimmel reportedly had no intention of apologizing, despite the backlash to his comments. And we don’t know what ABC said to Kimmel, or what was discussed at those “emergency meetings” between ABC, Disney, and the affiliates.

It’s also excessively hypocritical that the same people who are screaming about Jimmy Kimmel right now had nothing to say when the other side was being deplatformed and banned.

Also, that wasn’t the worst attack we’ve seen on free speech lately.

Would Charlie Kirk wanted Jimmy Kimmel taken off the air? Probably not. But due to an assassin’s bullet, Charlie isn’t here, and the rest of us are tired of Jimmy Kimmel’s shtick. If the ratings tell the truth, Kimmel was doing no better than Stephen Colbert (and Greg Gutfeld was kicking both of their butts), which means Kimmel’s show wasn’t financially profitable. If that was so, then the affiliates dropping him was truly the end of the road. But hey, maybe once MSNBC rebrands as MS NOW, Kimmel could go host a show for them instead.
