A quote: “Every revolution evaporates and leaves behind only the slime of a new bureaucracy.” ~~ Franz Kafka

I’ll start with a story …

*************************************************

She had looked so blue, I couldn’t help myself. Teasing some colored threads from an old shirt, I embroidered tiny flowers around the sleeve of her school uniform.

Her eyes lit up and I watched her skip … actually skip! … to school.

It wasn’t long until one of her friends asked shyly if I could to it for her. Then another.

I should have expected the knock on the door, the sour faces. Who was I, untrained and unlicensed by the State, to steal work from others?

Her father helped hide her uniform so she has something to remember me by.

************************************************

Now, it is your turn.

The demon chuckled as I bent over the embroidery. “That won’t help,” he rumbled. “The deal is-”
“I know the terms better than you, monster,” I answered. “You agreed to let me finish this work and in return you take my soul instead of hers.”
“Your skills are pathetic compared to hers.” he taunted. Then his eyes went wide as I showed him the pattern. He had a moment to roar in rage before being pulled into the tapestry.
“But I’m better at binding demons,” I said. “And you’ll stay there until you free all of us from the curse.”

  • Reality. Finding the thread. Assaults on the intended path. Reacting to incoming. Staying the course. A normal day of pushing the rock up the hill. Obstacles., unexpected. Staying the course. 90% of life is showing up. Being able to know the difference between “incoming” and “reinforcements” . Knowing “friend” from “foe”. And, on it goes. Daily.

  • “GHG reductions associated with product. Provide documentation.”

“For dishtowels?” I muttered. I wrote “Seven Greta units,” attaching the certificate.

“Number hungry children fed, or equivalent in donations to People’s Democratic Party. Provide documentation.” “Twenty-three,” adding another certificate.

These forms! I may quit the People’s Republic of California. Comrade Sanders insisted every new product meet “responsibility standards.” President Ocasio-Cortez raised the price of certificates. In our Free States, the only test is consumer demand. Not revolutionary, sure. But we have 18 brands of sneakers to their one, and 23 brands of toilet paper; they still await one to pass recyclability requirements.
