I’ll start with a story …

She leaned over the desk to stare at me, rustling the paper … MY paper … Then those words …
“I hope you’re not considering a career as a writer.”
I’d like to say it didn’t break me. That I told her off and succeeded despite her. No, I was crushed. I stopped scribbling out tiny adventures in one steno pad after another and went on with life.
It was my sons who found the pads and published them to great success.
She taught for many years and I wonder how many other dreams she strangled before they were born.
