The White House was lit up in all of its rainbow-colored glory on June 29th. On the Fourth of July, this was what we got:
This past Thursday in Chattanooga, Tennessee, Mohammad Youssuf Abdulazeez shot and killed four Marines and one Sailor, leaving behind families and their military brothers and sisters.
But despite this, we’re still hopelessly out of touch (well, some of us are, anyway) and thought asking White House Press Secretary Josh Earnest about the President’s New York City father/daughter outing planned for the upcoming weekend, along with throwing in a few good chuckles, was appropriate after discussing the attack.

DARLENE SUPERVILLE (ASSOCIATED PRESS): And then lastly, the daily guidance for today included this rare line that said the President will remain overnight in New York to spend time with his daughters. Usually, you only just say he’s remaining overnight in New York. Um, can you flesh out the father-daughter weekend a little bit?
JOSH EARNEST: This is an opportunity, as you know, the President is and had been scheduled to travel to New York for a fundraising event. That is not particularly unusual. But yes, the President is looking forward to a rare opportunity that he’ll have to spend a little personal time with his daughters in New York over the weekend.
I don’t anticipate that we’ll have a lot of details in advance about their activities, but the press pool will obviously be there with the President, and will inform your colleagues who will be participating, well, maybe not participating but at least travelling along — that might interfere with the personal nature of the father-daughter time — uh, but obviously we’ll make sure that you guys are aware of what they’re up to. All right?
WHAT?!
We heard the news stories about Obama and his daughters just wanting to be “normal” and get a family stroll in at New York’s Central Park this past weekend. He got his walk in Central Park complete with security detail.
And, despite the heartache felt around our nation, the Empire State Building was lit up green on Friday night to mark Eid al-Fitr, marking the end of the Muslim holiday, Ramadan.
As a spouse of a retired Marine, our military friends are family to us. While the families are the most impacted by these terrible acts of cowardice, fellow service members, families and friends all feel their pain. Our hearts ache for the families of the fallen-whether we know them personally or not.
So, when I thumbed through my Facebook feed this morning and saw friends albeit unintentionally, defending our President, I had a knee jerk reaction that caused my coffee to spill across the table.
I’m tired of people making excuses for our President, our administration and our media. I am tired of our service members being a mere afterthought overshadowed by the celebrity of our POTUS and his family. I could care less why they were in New York. Personally, after four Marines and a Sailor are shot on our own soil, I don’t want to see your posts on “what a great job President Obama is doing” for (fill in the blanks)…foreign policy…humanity…the economy. Or how Michelle Obama can “bust a move.” Who cares?! I don’t want to hear how I am “ungrateful” because I, for one, do not see things their way. I do not need a lecture or a guilt trip.
Another thing I heard today from a Facebook “friend” was “Give the guy (POTUS) a break!” Really?
He’s had his break. A HUGE one. Being among the privileged to be a leader of this great country I would say is one heck of a break. What about the families of the shooting victims? Where is their break? Their solitude? Their peace? Where is their opportunity to stroll through a park with their kids as a family on a Saturday afternoon without fear of being shot?
He’s had his break. And the celebrity that goes with it. And with that celebrity also comes accountability, responsibility but some people are too busy making excuses for him. Are we so asleep that the lives of these men who chose to serve their country are upstaged by witty banter and giggling over the President’s weekend plans!? Are we so asleep that our flags don’t fly half-mast for them but they are lowered for celebrities? As we so asleep that an iconic building of a city attacked by Muslim extremists almost 14 years ago is lit up in green to mark the end of Ramadan just a day after our service members are killed by a terrorist?
Yes, some folks are very much in a deep slumber. I’d say “wake me up from this nightmare” but some of us need to be awake at the wheel-white-knuckling it while our administration, media and public continue to pull the blankets over their heads.
Spot. On.
